Shikano-shima
Island

Page Two

The name of the town on Shikanoshima is Shikanoshima-mura, and thanks to Roger Rowen, we have pictures of it - its main street, below, and the picture above near the ferry landing.

I've walked or ridden down this street many times, either on the way to the resort beach on the other side of the island, or just taking in the island's natural and historic wonders.

This town was also a fishing village, but also made money off the tourist and resort trade. The stairway at the end of the street leads to the Shikano-umi Shrine.

The picture at left markes the entrance to the Shikano-umi Shrine area. The shrine worships the sea gods Sokotsu Watatsumi, Okitsu Watatsumi and Uwatsu Watatsumi. They are the guardian gods of fishermen.

And thanks to 1SG Lewis Williams, we have additional pictures of the town, below, taken from offshore in 1965.
