Kyushu

Although Japan is a small country, slightly smaller than California or Montana, it is greatly elongated, being some 1,300 miles in length. And, while GI's at Hakata did visit other Japanese Islands, most confined their travels to the island of Kyushu.

The island of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, covers about 42,023 square miles, roughly the size of Tennessee. Besides the Prefecture of Fukuoka, Kyushu is divided into six other prefectures, and since the Ryukyu Islands return to Japan, Okinawa has also been added as a prefecture of Kyushu. Click on these other seven prefectures to see a short profile of each: Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Ohita, Okinawa, Saga.

Immediately below you'll find links to pages with pictures of trips made by GI's from the base at Hakata to some of these areas. Below that are links to various web sites of areas on Kyushu.
