Ben Phillips' 1999
Return to Hakata

Page One

Ben Phillips returned to the Uminonakamichi peninsula where Camp Hakata/Brady Air Base was located in late October and early November of 1999. The following pictures are the result of that trip. He stayed at the Hotel Uminonakamichi, sixth floor, and the last two days with Wes Injerd, who lives in Fukuoka and is interested in the history of the American bases in Japan. Wes has become a friend of the site and has contributed greatly to it.

Above left is a picture of Ben Phillips standing next to the Lucky Lager sign on the road from Fukuoka to where the base was located.

Above, what the American's called Jane Russel Mountain, for obvious reasons, then and now. Below, pictures of the park today, referenced to how it was when we were there.

Here is where the main gate house was located.

This sign is located about where the base welcome sign stood.

Headquarters Building once stood here.

Area where the two-story barracks,
Armory, Mess Hall, among other buildings, stood.
Parking lot would have been the Parade Field.
