This photo is from a tourism brochure about the Jordan River Park and the ruins of the ancient town of Bethsaida. At the top of the photo is the "Sea" of Galilee. The Jordan River flowed to the right of the hill. The remains of an ancient dock at the western foot of the hill near the river course were found by archaeologists. Due to faulting in the earth's crust in this area, the location of the ancient lake shore in this area is not well known. Some ancient ports are currently under water. In other areas sand, gravel, cobbles, and boulders weighing tons from the heights above may have filled ancient channels. In January of 1969 a record Jordan River flood pushed sediments half a kilometer into the Sea of Galilee extending the shoreline near Bethsaida. (Bethsaida by R. Arav and R. Freund c. 1995). Bethsaida was where the disciples of Jesus named Phillip, Andrew and Peter were from. The town of Bethsaida was in the province of Phillip, a brother of Herod. Coins of Phillip were found in the ruins. Link to some 2005 photos of the Jordan Valley and Bethsaida: http://dqhall59.com/bethsaida.htm
