at his home on Coddle Creek Road, Mooresville, N. C., my family were staying with him at the time for about two weeks prior to his death. I was nearly 12 years old at the time. "Mr. Jim Ham, the plumber, had an experience one day recently that gave him a shock he will not soon get over. He had planned to go to Concord to get a truck and his 10-year old son Robert begged his father to let him go with him and drive the truck back home. Mr. Ham told him he could not do so -- that he was entirely too young and would not be permitted to drive a car or truck. He stepped in his sedan and drove to the Birdsall-Morrow garage, where he had arranged to secure the service of a mechanic in bringing back the truck, and when he stepped from his car his little 3-year-old son Charlie caught him by the leg of his pants and looking up, said: "I doin' wit' you to Concord." Mr. Ham turned all colors and felt faint at heart. The child had crawled on the fender of the car and held fast to that part of the machine while it came from the Ham home through town, a distance of a mile. The child hanging on to the fender had been seen by several people, but no alarm was given to the father of the perilous riding place of the juvenile."
