CHURCH
At his wife's urging,
Silus built a brush arbor and hired a minister. This eventually came to be known as Ham's Grove Baptist Church,
named after Silus' wife, Sarah (E. Hicks). Their daughter "Aunt Bett"
organized and taught Sunday School and Bible lessons. Their daughter, Betty,
organized the Sunday School. Information in Heritage ofIredell Co. states
"in 1913 Charles (Horne) bought the old Friendship Church building which
was being removed for a new building, moved it to a portion of land belonging
to Silus Ham where services were being held in a brush arbor, bought this land
and donated it and the church building to form Hams Grove Baptist Church."
Silas S. Ham fought in Civil War (source:

"articles on the
Dobson and Ham families that were published in the Heritage of Iredell
County. They hadn't seen them so were delighted.
There was no church for John and Esther's family to worship in so she was
instrumental in having a brush arbor cleared on their property to use for this
purpose. I quote from Article #275
Heritage of Iredell County: "In 1913 Charles (Horne) bought the old
Friendship Church building which was being removed for a new building, moved it
to a portion of land belonging to Silus Ham where services were being held in a
brush arbor, bought this land and donated it and the church building to form
Ham's Grove Baptist Church. Wilford
(Horne), C.H. Horne, and John W. Jordan
were the first deacons of this church." Charles' and Wilford's brother
Webb married Myrtle Ham. The church
still rests on the original timbers that were laid for the foundation, even after
a couple remodelings!

Sally Edwards' (his brother Miles' wife) crippled sister. However, when Henry
was only about 21 years old, he went one day to help his brother-in-law Tyra
Howell, work in the wheat field at Tyra's farm. Henry was just recovering from the measles. He got too hot
working in the field (probably a heat stroke) and that combined with his
weakened condition from the measles, affected his brain. He never recovered. For most of the remainder of his life he was
in the State Mental Hospital in

to North Carolina for about a year, then he followed his nephews, Will and Rome
(sons of brother, Gus) to the State of Washington where he worked for a couple
who raised fruit and vegetables at Washougal. When the husband died, Joe stayed
