37th United States Colored Troops - Recruits

(Originally the 3d Regiment NC Colored Infantry)

Involved in the Battle of Plymouth, NC

Men were being recruited for the USCTs in the area of Plymouth, NC before the Battle of Plymouth took place on April 17-20th, 1864. A complete list of the men who were involved in the battle is not known, but through the research of the Civil War Plymouth Pilgrims Descendants Society, the following list of men are assumed to have been present at the time of the battle. Soldiers that are confirmed as being at the battle will have information stating their involvement following their name. A

ALLEN, Seneca - Captain, 85th NY Infantry, was detailed to command the black recruits after the Battle of Plymouth began. He was captured during the battle and was held prisoner at Macon & Savannah, GA; Charleston & Columbia, SC and Richmond, VA. He escaped from prison twice but was recaptured. Paroled on 26 March 1865.

ASKIE, Isaac - Private, Co. C. Enlisted 6 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. Survived the war. Married Alcie. Died 23 Dec 1904. Buried in New Bern National Cemetery, New Bern, NC.

MARVIN, Hiram Leonard - Captain, Co. B. Recruiting officer, formerly a Sergeant Major in the 85th NY Infantry. Began recruiting for the 37th USCT on 7 Nov 1863 due to the death of Captain Daniel Foster. Captured at the Battle of Plymouth. Paroled 25 Feb 1865 from the prison at Goldsboro, NC. With impaired health, he resigned on 13 May 1865 and was discharged on 3 June 1865.

McNARY, Oliver R. - Major. Born 1 Feb 1823 in North Strabane Twp, Washington Co., PA, the son of John & Jean (Hill) McNary. Married 16 Sept 1846 to Elenor Grove. Recruiting officer and acting superintendent of Negro affairs at Plymouth, formerly the Quarter Master of the 103d PA Infantry. Captured at the Battle of Plymouth and was sent to Andersonville under the disguise of an enlisted soldier of the 103d PA. After three weeks his true identity was known and he was transferred to the officer's prison at Macon, GA. Died 20 April 1895 in Leavenworth, Kansas.

MILLER, David - Private, Co. D. Enlisted 1 Feb `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 19 May 1865.

MILLER, Jackson - Private, Co. F. Enlisted 14 Feb `64 at Plymouth, NC. Escaped. Reported as being picked up by the U.S.S. Miami after three days in the swamps. Mustered out 11 Feb 1867. Living in Plymouth, NC in 1890.

MILLER, Madison - Private, Co. E. Enlisted 14 Feb `64 at Plymouth, NC. Escaped during the Battle of Plymouth.

MILLER, Nelson - Commissary Sergeant, formerly Sergeant in Co. B. Enlisted 11 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. Appointed Sergeant 1 Nov `64 and 1st Sergeant 1 July `65.
