Discharged 20 Feb `63 at New Bern, NC by promotion to 2nd Lieutenant, 1st NC Union Volunteers, from which he was discharged 16 June `63. Married M. E. French 21 Oct `63 at Livingston, Columbia Co., NY. Enlisted again in the 24th Battery 19 Sept `64 at Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. Mustered out 13 May `65 at Rochester, NY.
AINSWORTH, Rufus C. - Sergeant. Born 1831 in NY, the son of Luther & Sally Ainsworth. Enlisted 21 Oct `61 at Hamlin, Monroe Co., NY at age 30. Mustered in as a Sergeant 7 Dec `61. Mustered out 7 Nov `64 at New Bern, NC. Married Lida. Died 20 May 1900 in Pepin Co., Wisconsin.
AINSWORTH, William W. - Private. Born 1839 in NY, the son of Luther & Sally Ainsworth. Enlisted 8 Oct `61 at Hamlin, Monroe Co., NY at age 22. Mustered in 7 Dec `61 as a Private to serve three years. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 20 or 24 Sept 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea at Charleston Race Course Prison, SC. Reinterred in Beaufort National Cemetery, SC as an unknown. Name is listed on a tablet at Beaufort National Cemetery.
ALBURTY, Francis M. "Dub" - Corporal. Born 1839 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 1 Oct `61 at Perry, NY at age 22. Mustered in at Buffalo as a Private 7 Dec `61. Promoted 12 April `63 to Corporal. Reduced in rank, date not stated. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. On account of sickness was not present at the battle of Plymouth, NC. Promoted 2 Aug `64 to Corporal. Reduced in rank 10 Dec `64. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. Discharged 6 July `65. Joined GAR Post 101 in Feb 1881 as a charter member. After the war, "Dub", as he was familiarly known, worked at his trade as a printer on the Perry Papers. In later years he was sexton of the Presbyterian church and died in his home across the street at 65 N. Main, Perry, NY. He died on 16 Feb 1910 and is buried in Hope Cemetery. His widow, Martha, died in 1933 at the age of 82.
ALBURTY, William - Private. Born 1843 or 5 in Perry, Wyoming Co. NY. Enlisted 22 Nov `61 at Perry, NY at the age of 16. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Served as Guidon. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 24 Aug 1864 of Dysentery at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 6698. Also borne as William C. and William Albuty and William Albert.
ALLEN, Zephaniah "Zeph" - Private. Enlisted 20 Sept `61 at Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY, at age 19. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA & Florence, SC. Exchanged 11 Dec `64 and joined for duty 20 April `65 at Coanjock Bridge, NC. Transferred 25 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. Mustered out June `65. Lived in Whitehall, Washington Co., NY after the war.
ANDREWS, Lemuel - Private. Born 1840 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 25 Oct 1861, at Perry, NY, at age 21. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. He died 9 March 1862 of Small Pox while the battery was at Washington, DC. Also listed as Lemuel Andrus.
ANDREWS, Mark - Sergeant. Born 1835 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, the son of Josiah & Lucy L. Andrews. Enlisted 21 Oct `61, at Perry, NY at age 26. Mustered in at Albany 7 Dec `61 as 1st Sergeant, but through some misunderstanding with the officers was reduced to the ranks. Discharged 29 Dec `62 to accept promotion to 1st Lieut. of Co. L, 10th Artillery. He also had subsequent service in the Twentieth Battery. Discharged 24 July `64. After his resignation he received an appointment in the Treasury Department at Washington, DC; an office he held thru several administrations. Dropped from the pension rolls on 8 July 1901 because of death. Last residence reported as 1416 Rhode Island Ave, Washington, DC. Although the family plot is in Hope Cemetery, we doubt if he was buried in Perry.
ANSBACHER, Moses - Private. Enlisted 7 Nov `61 at Albion, Orleans Co., NY, at age 19. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Discharged 22 Dec `62 in order to proceed to Germany to take charge of an estate which he had inherited..
ARMSTRONG, James H. - Private. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Mount Morris, Livingston Co., NY, at age 23. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Discharged for disability 3 July `64 at New Bern, NC.
ARMSTRONG, William - Private. Born 1842. Enlisted 15 Oct `61 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 19. Mustered in 7 Dec`61 Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth. Died 27 Oct 1864 of Scorbutus at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 11571.
ATWOOD, George S. - Private. Born 1844 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 26 Aug `62, at Perry, NY, at age 18. Mustered in at Buffalo 30 Aug `62. George was humorous, well read and exceedingly well liked. He enlisted without his father's consent. While stationed in the Park Barracks in NY City, his father called on him, abused him for enlisting and said he would get his discharge. His efforts failed and he then made the remark that he hoped George would be shot and never come back alive. George was captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 29 Aug 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 7207.
BACHELDER, Benjamin Franklin - Corporal. Born 1842. Enlisted 27 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 20. Mustered in at Buffalo 30 Aug `62 as a Private. Promoted 14 April `64 to Corporal. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA. While there, he was sent to the prison hospital and could have been saved if he had good shelter. It was thought he would recover as he was able to walk about and appeared strong on the day of his death, when he died of a congestive chill. He was of good Christian character and always kept his testament with him. Died 16 July 1864 of Congestive Fever at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 3447.
BAILEY, David - Private. Enlisted 2 Sept `64 at Seneca, Seneca Co., NY, at age 28. Mustered in 15 March `65. Mustered out 9 May `65 at Elmira, N.Y.
BAKER, John - Private. Born 1826 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 29 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 36. Mustered in at Buffalo 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 8 Sept 1864 of Pleuritis at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 8215.
BARKER, Gustavus - Private. Enlisted 21 Oct `61 at Clarkson, Monroe Co., NY, at age 25. Mustered in at Buffalo 7 Dec `61 as a Corporal. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 as a Private. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Released 27 Feb `65. Mustered out 6 July `65 at Rochester, NY. Lived at Clarkson Corners, NY after the war.
BARNES, Roswell H. "Uncle Barney" - Private. Born 1841 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 26 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 21. Mustered in at Buffalo 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 15 Sept 1864 of Scorbutus at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 8821. Napoleon B. Neal wrote in his diary "Barnes died last night. I think he died while sleeping. I slept by his side and was surprised to find him gone when I awoke in the morning."
BARTLETT, Hartwell - Private. Born 1844, the son of Leonard & Maria (Merchant) Bartlett. Enlisted 27 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 18. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 5 Sept 1864 of Scorbutus & Diarrhea at Andersonville Prison Hospital, GA. Grave # 7877.
BARTLEY, John B. - Private. Born in Palatine Bridge, Montgomery Co., NY. Enlisted 24 Nov `61 at Fort Plain, Montgomery Co., NY, at age 21. Mustered in at Albany 7 Dec `61. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 at Plymouth. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Captive at Andersonville, GA & Florence, SC. Died at Florence and is buried as an unknown at Florence National Cemetery.
BEERS, Lester M. - Private. The son of Ambrose & Loretta (Brown) Beers. Enlisted 6 Dec `61 at New York City at age 20. Mustered in 7 Dec `61 as a Private to serve three years. Died 13 June 1862 of Typhoid Fever at Academy General Hospital, New Bern, NC. Buried in New Bern, NC. Paul Bauer

BIRDSALL, George - Gunner Corporal, 6th Detachment. Born 1842 in Armonk, Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., NY. The youngest son of John H. and Eleanor Birdsall. Enlisted 12 Nov `61 at New York City at age 19, a Clerk. Mustered in 7 Dec `61 at Albany, NY as a Private to serve three years. Promoted 11 June `62 to Gunner Corporal; 1 Nov `63 to Sergeant, reduced to Private (date not stated). Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC and promoted to Gunner Corporal. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth. Held captive at Andersonville, GA where he was detailed in the hospital. Paroled 28 April `65 at Jacksonville, FL. Reported to Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD on 16 May `65. Mustered out to date 16 May `65 at New York City. After the war he came home and married Jennie Amelia VanTassel on 15 May 1867 in Tarrytown & had eight children. Following the war he went into the mercantile business with his brother Thomas Birdsall (veteran of the 127th NY) and their business known as "T&G Birdsall's" was located on the southwest corner of Washington Ave. and Beekman Ave., North Tarrytown, Albany Co., NY. Held captive at Andersonville, GA & Florence, SC. Died 2 Oct 1864 at Florence and is buried as an unknown at the Florence National Cemetery.
BOISE, Edwin L. - Private. From Moscow, NY. Enlisted 29 Aug `62 at Leicester, Livingston Co., NY, at age 26. Mustered in 30 Aug`62. Discharged for disability (heart disease) 4 March `63 at New Bern, NC. Died 3 Dec 1926 at Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY. Also borne as Boris & Boies.
BRAYTON, Rufus - Private. Born 1819 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 27 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 43. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Rufus had the distinction of being the tallest and largest man in the battery and known as "Our Infant." He was always afflicted with some malady, until he was so changed he was hardly recognizable. He died suddenly 14 April 1863 of Pneumonia at the Post Hospital, Plymouth, NC.
BRITTON, James H. - Private. Enlisted 29 Aug `62 at Leicester, Livingston Co., NY at age 22. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 15 Aug 1864 of Dysentery at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 5805. Marked as John H. Button.
BROOKS, John A. - Private. From Mosco, NY. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Leicester, Livingston Co., NY, at age 18. Mustered in at Buffalo 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA & Florence, SC. He was a quiet, faithful fellow who stood exposure and suffering better than most, but died on or about 1 Dec 1864 at Florence. Buried as an unknown at Florence National Cemetery.
BROWN, George - Private. Enlisted & mustered in 8 Oct `64 at Rochester, Monroe Co., NY at age 21. Joined the battery 16 Dec `64 at Roanoke Island, NC. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, 3d NY Artillery.
BROUGHTEN, Floyd - Private. Enlisted 3 Oct `61. Discharged May 1862 for physical disability. He was an engineer in the ambulance corps.
BROUGHTEN, Harrison - Private. Born 22 Feb 1840 in Ohio. Enlisted 25 Sept. `62. Discharged 17 Jan `63 for physical disability but afterwards re-enlisted in Co. D, 2nd Mounted Rifles. Died 10 June 1921 at Kissimmie, FL.
BUCK, Robert John - Private. Born 1824. Enlisted 3 Oct `61 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 37. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Engineer of the Ambulance. Discharged for disability 31 Dec `62 at New York City. Subsequent service in the 2nd New York Mounted Rifles.
BUCKLEY, Charles E. - Private. Born 1845in New York; the son of John R. & Abigail (Ridley) Buckley. Enlisted & mustered in 15 Feb `64 at Castile, Wyoming Co., NY at age 19. Paroled from Florence 6 Dec `64 at Charleston, SC. Reported 15 Dec `64 to Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD. Mustered out 13 July `65 at Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. William worked as a farmer as a young man, then later worked as a carpenter. Married 9 Sept 1866 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY to Mary E. Piper (sister of Albert & George Piper of the 24th Battery). CADY, Aaron Lester - Captain. Born 20 Feb 1836 in New York. Married Mary Allen in Monroe Co., NY. Enrolled at Hamlin, Monroe Co., NY on 5 Oct `61 at age 25. Mustered in as 2nd Lt. 26 Oct `61, but commissioned as 1st Lt. 9 Dec `61 back to muster in date. Promoted to Captain 13 June `63. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Macon & Savannah, GA & Charleston, SC. Escaped from a train 13 Oct `64 while enroute to Columbia, SC from Charleston. Escape date also listed as 5 Oct `64. Reached the Union lines at Strawberry Plains, TN. Reported to Camp Parole, MD on 29 Dec `64. Discharged 13 Jan `65. Died 8 Nov 1865 of disease at Waterford, Orleans Co., NY. Buried in Brockport Cemetery, Monroe Co., NY. John Allen
CALHOUN, George W. - Corporal. Enlisted 5 Sept `64 at Albany, Albany Co., NY at age 43. Mustered in 9 Sept `64 as a Private. Promoted to Corporal on 10 Dec `64. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third NY Artillery.
CALKINS, James - Private. Born 1840 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 22. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Admitted 29 May `64 to the hospital at Andersonville, GA. While there his health improved and fearing he would be sent back into the stockade planned an escape with several others including J. W. Merrill. Merrill spent several days obtaining medicines and supplies that they would surely need in the swamp. They got away at night but in a day or two were brought back to camp. Calkins had little mercy on the rebels and stole everything in the line of chickens, etc. that he could lay his hands on. Friends state Calkins later died in the hospital at Florence, SC; death date unknown. Buried in Florence National Cemetery, Florence, SC as an unknown.
CALTEAUX, Paul - Artificer. Born 1828 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 34. Mustered in 30 Aug `62 as a Private. "His broken French-English jargon was either a sport or a terror to his mates." Appointed Artificer on 1 Jan `64. "One of the busiest men in camp when gun carriages were to be repaired." Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Lost track of at Andersonville. Some said he went to work for the rebels at Charleston, S.C. Adjutant Generals records indicated he was transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. Also borne as Caulteux.
CAMP, George - Corporal. Enlisted 31 March `64 at Mount Morris, Livingston Co., NY at age 24. Mustered in 1 April `64 as a Private. Promoted to Corporal, 21 Oct `64. Reduced to the ranks, 10 Dec `64. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third NY Artillery. Prior service in 1st U.S. Artillery.
CAMP, William S. - Lieutenant. Born 1840 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enrolled 30 Aug `61 at Perry, NY, at age 22. Mustered in as a Private. Promoted to Sergeant 1 Nov `62; Quartermaster Sgt. 1 Nov `63 and promoted to 1st Lieut. 6 Feb `65 to replace George Hastings, resigned. On Feb. 23, 1865 assumed command of the battery at Fort Foster on Roanoke Island, NC. On 25 May `65 he transferred the remnant of the 24th to the 3rd Art. in Co. L. Mustered out 29 May `65 at New Bern, NC with rank from 28 Dec `64. Following the war he lived in Lockport. NY.
CANFIELD, Sherman D. - Private. Enlisted & mustered in 20 Sept `62 at New Hartford, Oneida Co., NY at age 21. Discharged 21 May `63 at Plymouth, NC, for promotion to 1st Lieutenant, 145th New York Volunteers. Commissioned 13 Aug `63 as 1st Lieut. of Co. A at Kelly's Ford, VA. Mustered out 23 Jan `64.
CANTWELL, Robert - Private. Enlisted 2 Sept `64 at Seneca, Seneca Co., NY at age 21. Mustered in 21 March `65. Mustered out 9 May `65 at Elmira, NY.
CARNAHAN, Charles - Private. Brother of William. Enlisted 17 Dec `63 at Leicester, Livingston Co., NY, at age 20. Mustered in 5 Jan `64. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 11 Sept 1864 of Scorbutus at Andersonville, GA. Also borne as Charnahan. Grave # 8470.
CARNAHAN, William C. - Private. Brother of Charles. Born in Leicester, Livingston Co., NY. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Leicester, NY, at age 18. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Paroled 26 Nov `64 at Savannah, GA. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. He said "Of all the 22 who came up from Leicester, A. T. Ferguson and I were the only 2 to return. My brother was with me and we parted [at Andersonville] on Sept. 10, 1864. He died outside the Andersonville stockade, starved to death. He was unable to walk and I was carried on pillow and blanket to see him. They kept moving us from one place to another as Sherman began coming along. We left Millen prison at night and Sherman was there in the morning. We were paroled at Savannah, Ga." William died 8 Nov 1922 at Mt. Pleasant, MI.
CHADBOURNE, Henry - Private. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at China, Delaware Co., NY at age 36. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 18 June 1864 due to Intermittent Fever at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 2157.
CHAPIN, William E. - Private. Born 1825. Enlisted & mustered in 30 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 37 from China, NY. Shortly after joining the battery he was taken ill and sent to the hospital. During his convalescence he proved to be such a good nurse he continued to work in the hospital. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. Shortly after the war he went west. In 1872 his address was LaSalle, IL. He died 15 May 1901 at La Grange, IL.
CHAPMAN, John - Wagoner. Born 1836. Enlisted 21 Nov `61 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 25. Mustered in as a Private 7 Dec `61. Appointed Wagoner prior to 30 April `63. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64. Deserted 9 April `64 while on veteran furlough.
CLARK, Charles A. - Quartermaster Sergeant. Born 1841 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 1 Oct `61 at Perry, NY, at age 20. Mustered in 7 Dec `62 as a Corporal. Promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant in June of 1862. Re-enlisted 1 January `64 at Plymouth, NC. Discharged 5 April `64 to accept promotion. Was commissioned 2nd Lieut. in the 16th NY Artillery, but on account of illness was unable to accept. He remained in Perry until Jan. 1865 when he was commissioned 2nd Lieut. in the 20th Battery with duty on Governor's Island and promoted to 1st Lieut. in May 1865. Following the war he was with the U.S. Telegraph Co. Then entered the service of the North-American Life Insurance Co. of NY. At the opening of the war, Clark, J. W. Merrill and Charles Dolbeer were the 3 society lions of the younger set and it was due to their influence that many of Perry's finest enlisted. Clark was a close friend of J. W. Merrill and it was do doubt due to Merrill's influence that he obtained lucrative practices in the Telegraph and Insurance Co's. He lived in the home at 55 N. Main St. Clark died 11 Aug 1907 in the Soldiers Home in Togus, ME.

He always bitterly recounted the treatment of our men in the stockade and blamed our government as much as theirs. Paroled 21 April `65 at Vicksburg, Miss. Reported 27 April `65 to Benton Barracks, MD. Sent to Annapolis, MD 6 May `65. Transferred 28 May `65 to 3d Artillery. Commissioned Captain 28 Jan `65 with rank from 10 Jan `65. After the war visited the southern states, married there and finally settled in Jefferson, IN. He died 23 Sept 1901 at Louisville, KY.

DOLBEER, Charles Henderson - 2nd Lieutenant. Born 22 Jan 1842 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, the the son of William Dolbeer born 1810, Lt. Colonel and Colonel of the 161st Regt. N.Y.S. in 1834 and 1835. Enrolled 25 Aug `62 at Batavia, NY at age 21. Mustered in 30 Aug `62 at Buffalo, NY as a Private. Joined the Battery at Newport Barracks, NC on 25 Sept. `62. Promoted to 1st Sgt. 1 Nov `62 and Orderly Sergeant on 4 Nov `62. Reduced 6 Jan `63. Commissioned 2nd Lieut. 23 June `63, with rank from 13 June `63. Discharged 21 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. After returning from the army he resumed his occupation as a bookkeeper. He joined the John P. Robinson GAR Post # 101 on 7 March 1892. He eventually conducted a coal business in Perry for some years and then returned to Batavia where he died 26 Dec 1916. He was buried on the family lot in Hope Cemetery in Perry.

HASTINGS, George Seymour - 1st Lieutenant. Born 24 Sept 1836 in Mt. Morris, NY; the son of George & Mary Catharine (Seymour) Hastings. Graduated Hamilton College in 1857. In 1861 moved from Oswego to Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, where he engaged in the practice of law. Married Helen Ames. Enrolled at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY on 26 Aug `62 at age 25. Mustered in 4 Sept `62. Commissioned 1st Lieut. 13 Sept. `62 with rank from 30 Aug `62. While at Plymouth, he was detailed as Judge-Advocate of the Sub-District of the Albemarle. George's wife was present with him at Plymouth, NC. When the fighting began at Plymouth on the 17th of April `64, she boarded the steamer Massasoit which took non-combatants to Roanoke Island, NC. George was captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. After the surrender at Plymouth he was sent to Macon, GA and remained there until Aug `64. While there he made two attempts to escape, both of which were frustrated just when success seemed assured. "The first was by means of a tunnel constructed with infinite labor during the night time, the only implements being a pair of hands, a broken gate-hinge and a jack-knife. The period of construction was six weeks, length of tunnel forty feet, ventilation imperfect, caliber just sufficient for one person who had subsisted on Confederate diet for six months. The second scheme resulted in the escape of all engaged in it, with the exception of Colonel Hastings." In August while enroute from Macon to Charleston his escape was successful - "he traveled for four nights through the heart of Georgia, and was finally held up by one John Jackson, a Georgia planter, aided by three hounds and one black man. His possession of a map of the country was regarded as positive proof of his being a spy. He was sent in irons to the city of Savannah, held for a few hours in the cell of a jail, but was finally restored to the so-called rights of a prisoner of war." He spent a month in sultry Savannah, two weeks in the filthy jail yard at Charleston, SC and 5 days in the prison camp near Columbia. "On October 11, 1864, with four New York officers, he succeeded in running the guard-line of a military prison camp in Columbia, S. C. After thirty-four days of adventure, with constant vigils and many narrow escapes from capture, the entire party reached the Union lines at an outpost near Knoxville, Tenn." "As he was making preparations to return to the field he received a telegram from Governor Fenton, which resulted in his appointment, first, as military secretary of the Governor of New York, and shortly afterward as private secretary." He resided in the city of Albany from January 1865 to September 1868 when he relocated to New York City and practiced law. He later relocated to Morristown, NJ. HOLLISTER, Benjamin H. - Private. Born 1840 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 22. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. He was at Andersonville from May 1, to Sept. 1 when he was removed to Charleston and kept in the hospital until Nov. 28. He was then paroled with the first 10,000 sick. Paroled 30 Nov `64 at Savannah, GA. After a furlough he reported in a weakened condition, had typhoid fever and was unconscious for 31 days. He was then discharged. Mustered out 23 May `65 at Jarvis United States General Hospital, Baltimore, MD. Following the war he lived in Wellsville manufacturing sash and blinds. He then moved to Perry and spent the remainder of his life here. He married Alice D. Macken and was last of the Perry Andersonville survivors. He was employed in a Perry saw mill and Guy Shaw who worked beside him for years says he never heard him mention the war and didn't know he had been in the service until one day a comrade whom Hollister had befriended in Andersonville came into the shop looking for him. In Merrill's History of the 24th Battery he tells how Hollister dropped his false teeth in a stream they were crossing and insisted upon the entire battery stopping to look for them. His mates refused to hunt and kidded him unmercifully for sometime while he was "gumming it" before he could get a new plate. A son Walter lived in Perry and was employed in the Robeson Cutlery factory. A grandson, _____ Hollister was a meter reader for the NY State Gas and Electric Co. in Perry and a member of Troop ___ of Geneseo, NY. Hollister was one of the old veterans who never affiliated with any G.A.R. Post. He did not approve of the Post being run by men who had seen very little if any service. He died 23 Feb 1922 in Perry , NY and is buried in Perry's Hope Cemetery.

HOMAN, Charles H. - Private. Enlisted 26 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 26. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Was in and out of the hospital until arriving at Plymouth, NC. He was invalided to Newark, NJ and underwent treatment for chronic diarrhea. Discharged 29 June `63. Transferred 1 Jan `65 to Co. G, 11th Veteran Reserve Corps. Was then sent to Point Lookout to guard prisoners until close of war. Also served in the 136th Co., 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps. At close of war returned to Perry and with another veteran, Charles Sweet conducted a meat market. A daughter Dorah taught in Perry School and married Robert Stainton. They and their sons lived in Buffalo. Another daughter married John N. Austin and lived in Kenmore where he conducted a real estate business. Although Homan's name does not appear on the John P. Robinson (Post) roll, it is believed from the minutes he was connected with the Post at one time. Charles died 4 June 1916 at Bath, NY and is buried in Hope Cemetery, Perry.

He was seized with malignant fever, removed to the hospital and died within a few days of Typhus Fever on 24 June 1864 at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 2443 or 2445. Listed as William S. Hosford.

HURLBURT, Edwin T. M. - Corporal. Born 1828. Enlisted 29 Aug `62 at Warsaw, Wyoming Co., NY at age 34. Mustered in 30 Aug `62 as a Private. Promoted Corporal prior to 30 April `63. Reduced, date not stated. Hurlburt says, "I was at New Berne and the terrible fight at Foster's Mills, and did as much retreating as any of them." He was detailed as clerk in the engineers office at New Bern and missed the battle of Plymouth 9 days later. Mustered out 23 May `65 at Beaufort, NC. After the war Hurlburt graduated from the Buffalo Medical School, settled one year in Ridgeway, NY and then located permanently in Hannibal, NY in 1867. He died 13 April 1915 at Petalume, CA. Also borne as Edwin T. M. Hurlbut.

Was intellectually strong and just as advanced in his ideas. Promoted to Corporal 23 July `63. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Detailed to work in the hospital at Andersonville. He gradually began to succumb to chronic diarrhea and disposed of his belongings and made a will. Died 21 Sept 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 9495.
KEENEY, George W. - Private. Born 1844. Enlisted 27 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 18. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. He lived an exceptionally clean life. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA and taken with diarrhea soon after entering the stockade. A surgeon prescribed an opiate but through some misunderstanding the nurse gave him an overdose and he never awakened. Died 20 May 1864 of Typhus Fever at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 1250. He was the second member of the battery to die at Andersonville. His sister Kate, who married William Hill of the 89th NY, wrote a beautiful poem in his memory. Also borne as Kenney.

LEE, Jay E. - Captain. Born 27 Dec 1833. Married 14 June 1859 to Harriett Lansing Hastings, sister of 1st Lieut. George Hastings. Lee was the young Perry lawyer who organized part of the 24th Battery and became the Captain. Enlisted 21 Oct `61 at Perry, NY, at age 27. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Commissioned Captain on 9 Dec 1861, with rank from 26 Oct 1861. While in the service he had a bad hemorrhage of the lungs as the result of exposure. He resigned and was sent home 13 June `63 while the battery was at Plymouth. Lee was not what could be called a popular officer and at one time was tried by court martial and acquitted. He was a very able officer and was brevetted Major and Lieu. Col. of volunteers. Soon after his resignation he went to California for his health. In Jan of 1866 he was appointed Lieut. Col. on Gen. Fenley's staff. Later he practiced law in Jacksonville, FL. The Memorial History of Mt. Morris says-"Following the war Capt. Lee was for 3 years in charge of the NY State Bureau of Pension Claims in Washington, D.C." He returned to Mt. Morris to practice law but his health failed as the result of his war experience and later died 11 Oct 1873 at St. Paul, MN. When the Mt. Morris GAR Post was organized on July 19, 1882, it was named the J. E. Lee Post No. 281. Capt. Lee is buried in Mt. Morris where his marker on Lot 33 Plot 1 bears the following inscription. "Jay E. Lee, Captain, NY Vols. Born Dec. 27, 1833 and gave his life for his country Oct. 11, 1873."
LENT, Abram - Private. Born 1820. Enlisted 29 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 42. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. A good bookkeeper and a great hand to sit around the fire at camp and talk of the good times he had at Perry. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC and failed rapidly after reaching Andersonville. He was insensible for sometime before he died 29 June 1864 of Pneumonia at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 2686.

MARRIN, Patrick - Private. Enlisted 21 Nov `61 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 25. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Re-enlisted 12 Jan `64. Wounded & captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Patrick was severely wounded when struck by six bullets at Plymouth. One lodged in his ankle and always remained there, causing him a great deal of trouble in later years. When wounded he started for the hospital with crutches made out of a couple of boards. On the way the rebels took his shoes, hat and coat. At Andersonville he made himself so useful he was retained until exchanged on 20 Nov 1864 at Savannah, GA. Rejoined battery 26 Jan `65. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. After the war he lived in Perry for a time. Died 29 Sept 1897 at Springfield, IL.

Name appears on marble tablet at Beaufort National Cemetery as being reinterred from the Charleston Race Course.
McCRINK, John - Private. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 35. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. John was a typical Irishman. His tongue wagged ceaselessly and he could exaggerate his stories beautifully. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Sent to Andersonville and ended up in the hospital. He kept sending for his friends, saying he was going to die. A priest finally came but John was unconscious before his arrival. He died 19 Aug 1864 of Diarrhea at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 6203. C. M. Norton, 1st MI Cavalry, a hospital assistant, states his death as 11 Aug 1864.

MERRILL, Julian Wheaton - Sergeant. Son of Cyrus Merrill. Enlisted & mustered in as a Private 30 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 21. Promoted to Sergeant prior to 30 April `63. Reduced 18 Feb `64. Was Sergeant and Quartermaster of the Battery at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. He was a month in the stockade and was then sent to the hospital, recovered and worked there. He was for a short time at Millen a prison inmate, paroled for exchange 20 Nov `64 at Savannah, GA and reached the Federal lines with little clothing, penniless and hungry. He remained in Gen. Mulford's office on the flagship New York for a month. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third Artillery. Mustered out 8 Sept `65 at New York City, as of 24th Battery. After the war Merrill was with the United States Telegraph Co. for a year and in Mar 1866 was elected Secretary of the North American Life Insurance Co. In May of 1869 elected Vice President and sent to California to restore his health which his war experiences had nearly ruined. He was married April 25, 1867 and was located in New York for many years. During the early days of the war Mr. Merrill, Charles Clark and Charles Dolbeer were the society lions of Perry's younger set. Merrill lived in the old homestead at 17 Leicester St. He was one of the leading scholars in the Perry Academy which probably accounts for his qualities of leadership and his outstanding intelligence which became so much in evidence during and after the war. During the time he was in Andersonville he seems to have been the guiding genius and it was to him the boys looked for leadership and support. At the time Lincoln was running for President against George McClellan, an informal election was held in the prison stockade Nov. 4, 1864. In S. M. Pike's account he says - "The meeting opened by the singing of the "National anthem" and "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean" conducted by J. W. Merrill. Speeches were made for both men. The choir under the direction of J. W. Merrill sang "The star Spangled Banner" "Hail Columbia and Home Sweet Home and Rally round the Flag." At the election J. W. Merrill was one of the 8 ballot clerks. At 6 P.M. the result was announced. Lincoln received 945 and McClellan 795." In 1870, Mr. Merrill wrote the History of the 24th NY Battery and produced a very creditable and worthwhile book. It has become very valuable from a historic standpoint. In 1867, Mr. Merrill married a Miss Morgan of the J. Pierpont Morgan family, and that connection undoubtedly accounts for his rapid rise in the service of the North American Life Insurance Co. He died in the Gowanda Insane Asylum in 1912. He enlisted in Perry but is undoubtedly is buried in Gainesville, NY.

Phillander was single and worked at home on the farm until July 24, 1859 when he went to Fowlerville, NY to learn the trade of machinist. He remained there till March 12, 1862. At Washington where the battery was embarking for New Bern, NC, Quinn took part in a fight when a big bully was picking on one of his smaller comrades. The bully drew a knife and stabbed Quinn several times. Quinn wrenched the knife away and badly wounded the bully. Both were dangerously hurt and sent to the hospital. Neither ever returned for duty. Discharged for disability 28 May `62 at Carver Hospital, Washington, DC. Quinn went to Portageville, NY after the war. Died 9 Oct 1902 at 547 Franklin St., Cleveland, Ohio.

RAYMOND, Henry - Private & Company Clerk. First enlisted in April `61 in the 2nd NY Infantry. Discharged 26 May 1863. Re-enlisted 7 Sept `64 at Albany, NY in the 6th NY Heavy Artillery. Against his wishes he was transferred, along with Daniel Jackson and others, into the 9th Heavy Artillery. Daniel Jackson jumped overboard and deserted at Fortress Monroe, VA. Henry Raymond took the name of Daniel Jackson and enlisted in the 24th Battery instead of going to the 9th Battery. Raymond's alias was discovered and when his case was explained, he was sent to the 6th Heavy Artillery with a recommendation for pardon.

RICHARDS, Albert - Private. Born 4 June 1832 in Claremont, NH, the son of Edward & Sally (Densmore) Richards. He was married 5 Oct 1854 in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY to Eleanor A. Wilcox, born 26 April 1835 in Warsaw, Wyoming Co., the daughter of Jerome Wilcox. They were married by Eben Francis, a Universalist pastor. Albert enlisted 1 Oct `61 at Perry, NY at age 29. Mustered in 7 Dec `61 as an Artificer, to serve three years. In 1862 he accompanied Capt. Lee and his sister on a visit to Bull Run battlefield. While on a scout off Newport Barracks he discovered the sawmill that became so useful to the Battery. Reduced, date not stated. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64 at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA, Charleston & Florence, SC. While in Florence he had nothing to eat for three days and had meat to eat only three times during his stay. Paroled from Florence Stockade 10 Dec `64 at Charleston, SC. Sent to St. John's Hospital at Annapolis, MD. Sent home on a furlough. It was at this time he was carried off the train on a pillow - a mere skeleton. Later he returned to the battery when recovered. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third NY Artillery. Mustered out at Syracuse, NY. Discharged July 17, 1865. After the war Richards lived in Perry and for many years ran the steamer Gypsy carrying picnic parties on Silver Lake. Albert joined the John P. Robinson GAR Post 101 on 21 Aug 1897. His widow Eleanor Richards gave the bulletin board that stands in front of the Universalist church. In later years her daughter, Nettie, married an actor, Frederick Rashland. They came to Perry and took the mother back with them to New York City. It is alleged they were looking for what little money the mother might have. At any rate, the poor little woman was found deserted on a doorstep a few days later by a former Perry boy who saw that she was placed in the Oxford Home where she died a few years later on 10 Aug 1925 at the age of 90. The Richards lived in a little house at 37 Lake St. and is where Mr. Richards died on 16 Oct 1917. Both are buried in Hope Cemetery at Perry.

RICHARDSON, Orlando - Private. Enlisted & mustered in 18 Aug `64 at Avon, Livingston Co., NY, at age 32. He was a "queer specimen of humanity" and during the hottest weather wore two suits of clothes to keep warm. Sergt. Russell was in charge of him with instructions to make a soldier of him if possible, and although Russell had 14 years experience in the regular army he gave up the job in despair. ROOD, Le Grand D. - Private. Enlisted 28 Aug `62 at Perry, Wyoming Co., NY, at age 19. Mustered in 30 Aug `62. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 7 June 1864 of Pneumonia at Andersonville, GA. Also borne as Le Grand D. Reed and Dr. Le Grand Rood. Grave # 1735. The morning the boys left for the front he called on Pembroke Safford at his home. The two had been inseparable thru life - had played together as children and attended school together. As Pembroke came out of the house he stepped over to the well and remarked. "I'll never see this place again." Both were captured at Plymouth and taken to Andersonville. Rood died on June 7, 1864 and Stafford on June 12. A marker has been erected to Rood in Hope Cemetery in Perry but he was buried at Andersonville. C. M. Norton, 1st MI Cavalry, a hospital assistant, states his death as 10 June 1864.

SHIRLEY, Phares - Private. Born in Perry, Wyoming Co., NY. Enlisted 25 Aug `62 at Perry, NY, at age 22. Mustered in 10 Sept `62 at Buffalo, NY. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. He was detailed for hospital duty at Andersonville. On the morning of 21 May `64 Shirley called on J. W. Merrill and held quite a long visit. Soon after reaching his own tent he fell dead of heart disease. It was a shock to his comrades for he was universally liked and kind and attentive to all. He was considered one of Perry's promising young men - clean in every way. Merrill clipped a lock of his hair and sent it to his mother. Official record states he died 23 June 1864 of Dysentery in the hospital at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 2340. Listed as Phares Shurley.

WETMORE, Chauncey - Private. Son of Ira & Anna Wetmore of Ticonderoga, Essex Co., NY. Enlisted 28 Sept `61 at Hague, NY, at age 23, a Laborer. Mustered in 7 Dec `61 at Albany, NY. During Feb `62 he was on duty detailed as Company Clerk. Re-enlisted 1 Jan `64. Following his re-enlistment he was on veteran furlough for 35 days starting 1 March `64. He returned in time to participate in the Siege of Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth. Died 9 Nov 1864 at Florence, SC. His comrade of the 24th NY Battery George A. Holman stated that he died on November 13, 1864 at Florence, SC and this date was accepted by the pension office as his date of death. He was also known as Chauncey Whitmore. Buried in Florence National Cemetery as an unknown.
WHITBECK, Thomas Henry - Private. At the time Henry's enlistment, his mother Phebe, and his brother Charles, about 12 years of age, lived and worked the small family farm of 54 acres which was owned by Benjamin F. Jones, his mother's brother, with Henry doing the principal work and management on the farm. Henry's father had died August 7, 1854 and his mother had not remarried. His mother, Phebe Jones married his father John Whitbeck on February 28th, 1837. Their first son William H. died about 1848. Prior to entering the service Henry worked on his mother's farm and the contribution to the household for his work was determined to be worth one hundred dollars over and above his board, clothes and personal expenses. Enlisted 23 Oct `61 at Hamlin, Monroe Co., NY, at age 19. Mustered in 7 Dec `61. Died 3 Feb 1862 of Typhoid Fever in the Battery Tent Hospital at Camp Congress, Washington, DC. His was the first death within this Battery.

Was in command of a section of the artillery at Plymouth. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. Died 25 July 1864 of Diarrhea in the hospital at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 3947.

WOOD, Emmet T. - Private. Enlisted 29 Aug `62 at Leicester, Livingston Co., NY, at age 18. Mustered in 30 Aug `62 at Buffalo, NY. Captured 20 April `64 at Plymouth, NC. With others Wood attempted to escape from Andersonville and got away from the hospital but the dogs tracked them down in the morning. Wood had a portion of his ear torn off by them. He was placed in the stockade and denied many things the others had. Died 1 Sept 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea at Andersonville, GA. Grave # 7581. Listed as Emmit T. Wood.

Remained a prisoner for two weeks and then was sent to Weldon, NC by boat. From there he was sent to Raleigh and then on to Salisbury Prison, NC. Paroled 2 March `65 at Goldsboro, NC and sent to Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD. Transferred 28 May `65 to Battery L, Third NY Artillery. Mustered out to date 25 April `65 at Albany, NY as of the 24th Battery. Also borne as Wolsey.
