Cuil Choluim will host the Midrealm's FALL HERALDIC AND SCRIBAL .SYMPOSIUM on November 7th, 2003, in Millhousen, Indiana. I, your humble Pursuivant and Web-Geek, will be the autocrat. LORD MALCOLM'S HERALDRY PAGE One of the most significant things that lends itself to the ambience of the middle ages is heraldry. Whether an armorial device painted on a shield, displayed on a flag, the crying of "Oyez" as an announcement is made, or the pomp and ceremony of court, properly executed heraldry adds a dimension to what we in the society call "The Dream" that is near unrivalled. A casual observer might think that the practice of Heraldry deals solely with Armorial Achievements, but the closer it is studied, the more awesome the scope of the art and science of heraldry becomes. One of the duties of a Pursuivant is to educate the populace in the proper devising and display of armorial devices, and the proper use of names and titles. It is not by accident that the Clerk of Precedence and the Minister of Protocol in the Middle Kingdom fall under the auspices of the Office of the Dragon Herald, the Principal Herald of the Midrealm. This page, then, is ever under development. As time goes by there will be links to other pages added, articles, forms for download by the populace, commentary, proposals and all manner of information that I can sink my grubby little Dal Riadan claws into. Please check back frequently for updates. In Service; Malcolm mac Lachlainn, Cuil Choluim Pursuivant ARTICLES BY THE LOCAL PURSUIVANT: (A small listing of articles, ever expanding, by the local pursuivant) Flag Article written by Laird Maelcolum Mor mac Lachlainn FORMS: (These are links to the forms on the site of the Dragon Herald, repeated here for convenience)
DOWNLOADS Pimbley's Dictionary of Heraldry: Hey, what do ya want? It's a freebie! (External Server) Symbolism's of Heraldry Another Freebie. Full of heraldic Urban Legends, but a fun read. Shields, Knights, and Heraldry: Oriented for Children Blazon95 and Blazons! 2000 - Not terribly useful for an experienced herald, and a little buggy and limited, but excellent as a starting point for people wanting to create arms, and for aspiring heralds to learn the bare fundamentals. Please do note that these are far from authoritative or complete programs, and often are chock fiull of victorianisms, as they are written for modern heraldry rather than for period practice. There is also a new Beta version of Blazons! 2000 HERE. (DOWNLOAD FROM EXTERNAL SITE!) LINKS ARMORY Morsulus Herald's O&A Database Front End - I ran across this little gem about a year ago, and fell absolutely in love with it. What this provides is an extremely powerful and intuitive front end, invaluable for those who aren't familiar with database-ese. It uses the actual OandA files, and I highly recommend it. This works really well on a laptop for doing conflict checks at a consultation table at an event. A GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN HERALDRY - By James Parker: An online version of this incredibly hard to find work. Priceless. ONLINE HERALDIC DICTIONARY - From the University of Notre Dame. Illustrations from Fox-Davies A DISPLAY OF HERALDRIE: by John Guillim (c1551 - 1621) - Another hard to find work, the owner of this web site doesn't have it all put up yet, but it's going slowly and surely. Khevron's Heraldry Page: A West Kingdom Herald, I've had occasion to correspond with him in the past. Loads of informative material. Modar's Heraldry Page: Another fine page on Heraldry in the Society Francois Velde's Heraldica - If you're an experienced herald and haven't heard of him, shame on you! And here is his links page, which are incredibly complete. Tempus Periginator's Little Heraldry Book - And how to's, and clip art, and tips, and so on, and so forth. Office of the Dragon Herald for the Middle Kingdom. 'Nuff Said.
NAMES NAME ARTICLES FROM THE LAUREL SOVEREIGN OF ARMS PAGE (So this is obviously some good stuff here!) ARTICLES The Oaths of the Medieval Herald - A modern translation of the oaths a 15th century herald swore. Voice Heraldry - An exhaustive dissertation on the subject by Baron Modar Nezanich
