On May 13th, the CSCC had 13 members in attendance. Most of the participants played in the double, round robin, bughouse tournament (G5). Bughouse is a chess variant where a two-man team, playing opposite colors on two separate boards, challenges another two-man team, and one partner can use the other’s captured pieces. Therefore, once one partner captures a piece, the other partner can now drop that piece onto any vacant square (as long as it is not a pawn onto the eighth rank) of his board in lieu of making a regular move. The partners can advise each other regarding moves or captures, and either partner can win to gain the point for the team. The team of twins born to play bughouse steamrolled the field going undefeated. Here are the results:

As I was looking over my chess database this week, I ran across a fact I thought was interesting. I began counting the number of games I published from specific opponents. While the fact that Jeff Fox was at the top with 7 games, I was surprised to see that Anthea Carson was tied with him at 7 games. This is surprising because of the fact that most of my 51 games against Jeff were played at the club. However, all, but one game, from the 12 times I have played Anthea, come from USCF-rated weekend tournaments. Despite the fact that she was published 7 times in the Yahoo! Group, not once had a game between us been chosen as the Game Of The Week. Therefore, I decided to publish the final 4 rated games we played together, let the group vote, and show how a typical battle goes between myself and the 86th highest quick rated woman in the US.

Initially, I had hoped to publish our last encounter together. Anthea was promoting her book, “How To Play Chess Like An Animal,” with a chess simultaneous exhibition by LM Brian Wall at Black Cat Books in Manitou Springs. My wife had won a gift certificate from the Bobby Fischer Memorial to a store in Manitou Springs, and I thought I would get to play chess against a Master while my wife shopped. Unfortunately, Anthea’s promotional skills, this week, were about as good as Artie Fufkin’s, the record promoter in the Rockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.” Brian asked, “I was told there would be massive media support?” Anthea responded, “We did massive. We saturated. We over-saturated.” While she was able to get a reporter to write an article for the local newspaper, the event was referred to as a “chess simulation.” However, that turned out to be a rather appropriate description as the Master was late, and I was the only one to show up. So, the simul consisted of me playing Anthea and her son. I won both but should have lost both. I didn’t record the game, so I can’t show you that one, but this game is similar in that I got an early edge that I slowly gave away until I finally I survived the endgame by trading off her more powerful weapons leaving her only the golden knight amidst the ruins Cair Paravel.

Of course, this is only a chess simulation. Any similarity between this game and actual chess is purely coincidental. Please remain seated until the simulation has come to a complete and final stop.
