On August 7th, the CSCC had 14 members in attendance. In the USCF-rated ladder games (G60), Josh Bloomer blanked Mike Filppu and Kale Duncan dunked Tom Mullikin. The rest of the participants played in a double round robin, blitz tournament (G5). Here are the results:

Last week I reported "In the USCF-rated ladder game (G60), Jerry Maier might have gotten the win over Tom Mullikin." However, the truth of the matter is that Tom Mullikin managed to come back and get the win over Jerry Maier. My apologies to Tom for assuming he was out of that Mullikin magic.

This weekend I played in the Pikes Peak Open. There were some good things about it, and there were some bad things about it. I was reminded of a book I enjoyed as a child called, “What good luck! What bad luck!” Each page of the story alternates between the good and bad things that happen to the protagonist. At one point, the main character is falling from the sky because his parachute didn’t open (bad luck). Then the next page starts, “What good luck, he is falling right towards a haystack.” Of course, the next page is the bad news, “What bad luck, there is a pitchfork in the haystack.” My tournament was like that. What good luck, I get a forfeit win in the first round. What bad luck, I decided not to bring anything to do if I had a break and had to wait an hour before getting the win. What good luck, the music headphones ban is lifted and I have my mp3 player with me. What bad luck, I didn’t charge it the night before. What good luck, Andy Rea fails to capitalize on a huge attack on my king. What bad luck, I lose a drawn rook ending to him over the course of 5 hours. What good luck, Shaun MacMillan rushes a b4 move giving my knight and rook killer positions. What bad luck, I decided to trade both the knight and rook for a drawn rook ending, which I lose over the course of 6 hours. However, my game with Bill Weihmiller was different. I got everything I wanted in the opening, sacrificed a piece to keep my attack alive, and finished the game on an exclamation point! There wasn’t any down side, unless you consider getting paired with Bill the bad luck.
