Being a show dog is not always easy....It's not all blue ribbons and bait. There's a lot that goes on before you even get ringside and then there's alot of standing around, until it's your turn to shine. Many of us "show dogs"....know, that not everything you need to know about showing can be learned from your handler or your owner. Sometimes you just have to stick your nose out and see where it gets you...
Here, we offer a lighthearted look at a few of the things we've learned....In The Ring.
When your in the puppy classes, if a BUTTERFLY teases you in the ring..it's ok to try and catch it.
When doing the recall exercise...SOMETIMES there are no points taken off if you leap in the air and kiss your mom before sitting squarely at her feet.
It's ACCEPTABLE to inquire with your nose, what's in everyone pockets.
While waiting at ringside, if you stare at someone long enough...they WILL share their bait.
When trotting around the group ring, it is GREAT FUN to try and grab the tail of the dog ahead of you.
If a dog or handler should fall down in front of you, remember your OVER command.
To keep from being bored at ringside, GO AHEAD and goose strangers with your nose.
It is better to be 'spunky' IN THE RING than to be a spark plug!
It's not a good idea when gaiting to try and retrieve the SQUEAKY toys the photographer is tossing around in the next ring.
When its your turn to get your picture taken TRY NOT to knock over the photographer in an attempt to get all his toys.
If someone crowds you in line SMACK their handler in the knees with your tail.
Not all judges like it when you GRAB their ties. But most of them like it when you lick their face!
When your mom gets you to the group ring..... late....WAG YOUR TAIL extra hard, the gallery will still clap for you.
If your mom forgets to breath in the group ring...do something FLAT COATISH to lighten up the mood...like roll over on your back and SMILE or leap straight up in the air SEVERAL times from a stand still!
Try not to STEAL toys or ribbons from other dogs as they leave the ring, no matter how much you want them!
