The Eastern Frontier Presents the Eleventh Annual

Examining the Material Culture of 17th - 19th Century Eastern Native Americans
Akron, Ohio April 1-3, 2005
The purpose of this conference is to examine
various aspects of the
material culture and lives of Eastern American Indians during the 17th, 18th,
and early 19th centuries. . In addition, there will be displays of period
artifacts for study, and artisans and merchants will be on hand with
historical reproductions and books of related interest.
The conference represents a unique blend of individuals, both in its
presenters and its attendees. It brings together top academics, professional
and avocational historians, museum personnel, living historians, artists,
and
collectors of Indian art and artifacts, as well as ordinary folks, who all
happen to share a common interest in Native American history and material
culture. While the conference began with more of a Midwestern audience, in
recent years we have had attendees routinely come from all over the United
States and Canada, as well as a few from Europe.
In addition to the fine speakers, the other factors that have greatly
contributed to the quality of the conference are the collectors, artisans,
and merchants who yearly attend. We have been honored in the past with many
fine displays of historical objects which were graciously shared with the
attendees by their owners. Often these are chosen to compliment one or more
of the presentations. We also are pleased to attract some of the finest
contemporary artists and craftspeople who replicate historic woodland
artifacts and equally fine merchants selling everything from authentic beads
to books on Native American art and culture.
The 2005 conference will be held in the conference
facility of the
Radisson Hotel, Akron City Centre, in Akron, Ohio. This is also the host hotel
and
