Classes are offered individually or in small groups with an average of 3-4 students (maximum 6). This intimate class size, along with our unique methodology, helps us tailor our programs to your specific needs and adapt our teaching method to your learning style. The Costa Rican Language Academy offers an open enrollment. You may begin classes whenever you would like during the year.
You will be placed in classes according to your Spanish proficiency level.
Content of Our Spanish Classes
The content of our Specialized Level Courses vary according to your specific needs. Our Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Level Spanish classes; however, include the following:
Conversation:
Student participation is an integral part of all our classes, enabling you to communicate, comprehend and use accurate pronunciation in Spanish as quickly as possible.
Printed Materials:
We have designed our own unique set of printed material (in addition to textbooks) for use in our classes. Our class material provides the flexibility to vary our teaching style and approach according to the type of lesson, your individual need and your learning style. In addition to our printed materials, we use real-world examples, such as newspapers, books, magazines and even menus and street signs.
Grammar:
We carefully explain and review all grammatical points appropriate to your level. We read and discuss Costa Rican and Latin American Literature in our advanced levels.
History and Culture:
We discuss the culture, history and sights of Costa Rica in all levels.
Music:
We use music in our classes as an effective way to improve your comprehension and learn more about our culture.
In these classes students are taught traditional and popular Latin American songs. In addition to increasing our vocabulary, this greatly helps in augmenting the fluidity of their spoken Spanish. Each student receives a printed song-sheet, from which we study vocabulary, prounciation, the song's theme and finally sing the song itselfClass schedules are flexible. We offer diverse programs and the opportunity to design your own schedule. Students may also choose to supplement their group classes with additional private lessons, if they wish.
ACADEMIC CREDIT
Many of our students have received academic credit for their Spanish studies at the CRLA. Upon completion of a program, we give all students a certificate of attendance. In addition we can also provide students, upon request, with a confirmation of enrollment, a letter certifying study dates, progess, language level, a transcript indicating the number of class hours completed and an overall grade for performance and any other documents required by their university. Generally one semester unit of credit is granted for each 15-20 hours of class time, but since conditions for granting credits may vary in some universities, we recommend that students first check for specific requirements with their home university.
