Transfer of LTC Insurance from TIAA to MetLife

It's your money!

It was over two years ago that TIAA-CREF announced that they were exiting the Long-Term Care business. There is some dispute over whether the word "sold" or "transferred" should be used, but I'm using the latter word here.

If you've received a notice regarding the transfer of your Long-Term Care Insurance's insurance exposure (i.e. financial responsibility) to MetLife from TIAA, you might want to look at the two message threads below. You have to register with Morningstar to post on those boards, but you should be able to read the messages without registering.

These two links will take you to the Morningstar message threads.

OT: TIAA Long Term Care Insurance

TIAA and Long Term Care Insurance

Note that there is a deadline for returning the form you received, after which you will be assumed to have consented to the transfer of the insurance.

TIAA and TIAA Life are incorporated in the state of New York. So when I mention that state in the linked discussions, I'm usually talking about regulation of those companies. But the other state issue is that the insurance commissioner in the state where you live may have something to say about the transfer. I've heard that not all states have yet approved the material to be sent to customers, so you may not have received a communication in February, 2007. If you have any doubt about whether you should have, call MetLife, the company that's servicing the policies. You can get MetLife's number from TIAA-CREF if you don't have it handy.

With some reluctance (since I don't want to add to the discomfort of those few who seem to have been omitted from the mailing list), I've posted the first three pages of the New York State customer mailing, and the shipping and return envelopes in a .PDF file. It's quite large and slow to load. You might need to right-click on the link, and chose "Save As" from the drop-down menu. Click here for the .PDF file.
