TAILS Pet Care Forum
FREE PET ADVICE!
April 6th, 2006, 7-9pm
Community Room, Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue, Norwalk

Come one, come all to the 4th Annual TAILS Pet Care Forum!

On Thursday, April 6th, at 7:00pm in Norwalk City Hall’s Community Room, a panel of four professional animal care experts (2 veterinarians, 1 Animal Control Officer and 1 dog trainer) will be happy to address concerns and curiosities regarding everything from: Fluffy’s eccentric behavior to should I vaccinate every year, from Heart Worm concerns to Litter box problems, from laws regarding leashing dogs to what is the actual risk  of rabies to many more topics of the attendees’ choice. Emcee for the  evening will be Ann Karrick of TV’s For The Record and on-air talent  with WEBE,WICC, & WFAS. The event is free and is part of the TAILS Spay  Day program of events hosted by the group, a local non-profit group based out of Westport (and working throughout Fairfield County) to reduce the suffering and euthanasia rates of dogs and cats through their spay/neuter programs.

The panel includes:

  • Dr. Michele Lamothe, DVM, Broad River Animal Hospital, Norwalk

  • Dr. John Caltabiano, DVM, president of Tait’s Every Animal Matters (TEAM), Westbrook

  • Mary Ellen Walsh, dog trainer, owner of The Grateful Dog

  • Officer Peter D’Amico, Animal Control Officer, Westport.

The Forum is part of the series of events which the group kicked off on
February 28th and includes a month of events surrounding Spay Day (a
nationally recognized program originated by the Doris Day Animal
Foundation), with the Pet Care Forum as just one of several activities
taking place. As part of TAILS Spay Day, the organization is aiming to
complete 140 dog and cat spay/neuters to help end the pet overpopulation problem. With the help of local businesses, veterinarians and individuals, T.A.I.L.S hopes to reach their fundraising and spay/neuter
goal for Spay Day 2006.

Number of spays/neuters per year

With your help we have been able to provide more assistance then everThe chart above shows the number of animals T.A.I.L.S. have spayed or neutered by year.  As you can see, we are dramatically increasing our assistance.

We don't want the number to go flat for the remainder of the year.  Please consider a donation today to the address below (or by clicking the How You Can Help Link above) so we can continue providing our services.  For the last two years, we have surpassed the previous years total in June, doubling the number of animals we have spayed or neutered by the end of the year.  We thank everybody for their assistance in helping us grow.

Spay Day Update - Thursday, March 25 - From an update by Dorrie Harris, concerning the Spay Day success today:

We did manage to get 20 cats to TEAM <<a mobile spay/neuter clinic>> today.  We had 8 domestics, 12 ferals - 7 females, 5 males.  ALL of the feral females were pregnant.  Hope that's not a trend.  TEAM was very happy with the fact that we got the pregnant ones and congratulated us on having stopped literally hundreds of thousands of cats from being born in the future.

Looking at some numbers - Say the average litter is four cats, so seven females would give us 28 kittens, ferals average 35% female kittens, assume two litters per year.

Time Females Males New females New Males Total Cats
Start 7 5 10 18 40
One Year 41 67 57 107 284
2 years 235 429 329 611 1,628
3 Years 1,354 2,506 1,896 3,520 9.312
4 Years 7,800 14,476 10,920 20,280 52,524
5 Years 44,928 83,428 62,899 116,813 308,128

Three hundred and eight thousand one hundred and twenty eight cats?  That's assuming 4 kittens per litter.  Make that five kittens per litter (the average is between four and five for ferals) and you are talking just over 1.3 million cats possible from these 7 females.

Now at the end of five years, there will be 7 females and 5 male cats

Held in March, the Pet Healthcare Question and Answer Forum was a great success. A panel of local experts answered audience questions about pet healthcare at Norwalk City Hall.   Moderated by Lauren Collier, Host of Pet Talk and Cablevision News12 Metorologist, several dozen people came out with questions.
