Stanley, April 1999
April was a fun month. Easter was at the beginning of the month, for that we headed off to Atlanta to spend the weekend with Anna's brother. It was a very nice holiday.
During the month I found another Stanley, quite by accident. My company makes high quality stuff that does the special effects and editing for many movies, TV shows, sports shows, and stuff like that. We have some demonstration scenes that show all the stuff we do in little segements from two or three seconds to five minutes or so. They are presented in an MTV type of thing, just one after the other with some music in the back. We have a monitor in the reception area so guests could watch it while they are waiting.
I walked by one day and one of the clips was from a bike race on ice. People had studded tires, helmets, very serious stuff. At the winners circle the girl was accepting her trophy and had another Flat Stanley with her. There are over 1,600 internet pages about Stanley, so from time to time guess you will see another one.
At the end of the month the company attends a trade show in Las Vegas. We have a very large display booth, it's 80 feet by 120 feet, and two stories tall. Over One Hundred and Fifty Thousand people attend the show, called NAB. NAB stands for North American Broadcasters. I don't get to go to the show, I have to be one of the six people who stay at the office. Gerry, my friend and coworker gets to go every year, this year he had Flat Stanley as a guest with him. Not too sure about Gerry as a chaperone for Stanley, some of the pictures he came back with may not be the best thing for a Flat Cardboard young person to be doing.
Here is an example. In one of the casinos Gerry brought Stanley to pose on the slot machines. If you look at the wording on the front of the machine it says the machine accepts bills from one to one hundred dollars. I could never imagine putting that much money into a slot machine. I don't know when this picture was taken, but it must have been at the end of the show because there are no players at the machines. When you think of Las Vegas you think of casinos, and nothing says casino better then a row of slot machines.
The House of Blues is another place Gerry took Stanley for a visit, you can see him here sitting on the rocks under the sign if you look real close.
I don't know if they saw Elvis there or not. But since Elvis is everywhere in Vegas…
