Buttermilk Cake

Preheat oven to 350, grease and flour two nine inch pans.

Combine the flour, soda, and salt.

Beat shortening and 1 1/3 cup sugar until light and fluffy, then add the buttermilk and flour mix in thirds alternating and mixing well after each addition.

Beat the egg whites until frothy, add the cream of tartar and beat until soft, att the remaining 2/3 cups sugar and beat until stiff. Fold into batter.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes
