From the artist to the art collector

This is original repousse art and it begins with the drawing, after the selection of the subject matter.
I make my own blue-prints [designs] to lay out the subject and to make the inspiration suitable for the metal relief sculpture known as repousse. The preliminary drawings are my means of exploring the potential of an idea by saturating it with many visual possibilities. Often, these drawings are overlaid and combined together to create a new assemblage that captures the original inspiration. The culmination of these new visual ideas integrated with visions I had made years ago in small sketches.
I draw inspiration from history, mythologies, folktales, and real life.
Traditional repousse is made by hand with ancient style tools; no molds or stamps are used. Embossing the metal on a soft surface (which allows it to give when pressure is applied) in order to render the image in the metal begins the process. The design is then chased from the front followed by embossing it from the back (repousse) using special hand tools. These steps are alternated until the design is fully completed.

The variety of color effects is created by a combination of several methods and techniques. Fire will naturally oxidize the metal. Special traditional patinas, paints, metal stains, and gold or silver leaf create more dramatic effects. Polishing highlights the image and develops a contrast. In the end, clear varnish protects and retains the finishing.

PATINATION is a natural innovative process to add color without the use of pigments; an elegant employment for art on copper- brass- steel and other metals.
A fortuitous arraignment of patinas (metal oxidations) can develop unexpected contrasts with organic earthly colors. After this point, further touchups may alter the form and volume intentionally, to a meditative image. It is like rediscovering the image, moving in and out of the abstraction; a mysterious, narrative and enigmatic process. It is like an oracle that knows how to enhance the message in a secret dialogue. Dream interpretation by cryptic impulses.
The application stretches traditional application methods and with formalist aesthetics interpretations. Traditional, that is not traditional.
