"FLORIDA ARTIST OF THE MONTH" August 7, 2003 ORLANDO MUSEUM OF ART 1st Thursdays Event "Sculpture: The Grand Art Form"
“Our Sun” – “ America” and “Under the Sun” were inspired from my interest in civilizations around the world. I have surrounded the sun with a flaming Mandela of traditional motifs to symbolize an overlaying of various world cultures. Within the span of time in which man has inhabited the earth this sun has been a symbol of life giving as well as a symbol of a deity. It is a source of wonder that so many of the same symbols appear in cultures that are unrelated in space and time. The art maker has used international visual symbols to communicate our relationship to this heavenly body. The past, the present, and the future are the vehicle for this journey, into the world of the 21st century. The complexity of the human present, in my work, as a significant art form element, generates emotions and philosophical questions about the paradoxical phenomena that navigate our modern societies and the whole world.

The image shows many faces on tree forms. In some cultures, both past and present, humans regarded plant forms as spirit beings separate from himself but sharing in life and respected as such. My intention here is that modern man must respect nature as a life form. This is a reciprocal relationship, as plant life both nourishes man and allows for his existence. This is to say that we must understand this relationship and become, in turn, the caretakers of nature.
Over the edge of the sea, the night shrinks. The sunlight enters with peace. Jason and the Argonauts have reached the shore. Then, the messengers came wearing black and white. “Who knows when we will meet again?” they said. With flaming eyes we taste the same bitterness of parting.
