We were saddened to hear that Gene Chick passed away Feb. 1st at Swedish Memorial hospital. Gene, along with his wife Carol, have been strong supporters and members of the Colorado Welsh Society. Gene served on the board for many years and his tenor voice was a stalwart anchor in the choir.
Our condolences go to Carol and her family.

Gene Chick ------- The man who would be Welsh.
Gene heard a lot of stories about his great grand father, Frederick Chick, who came to the United States in the 1840's at age two, sailing from Wales with his mother who died on the passage over. The assumption that he was of Welsh heritage influenced Gene to buy and raise Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Join the Welsh Corgi League of England and the Welsh Corgi Club of America.
Seeing a notice in the Denver paper of a Welsh Society meeting, Gene went to learn more about that Welsh heritage. There he was told that he was not Welsh, Chick was an English name and a lot of different peoples sailed from Wales for the United States. Maybe he was a little disappointed but Sue Jones had the final word on the subject of his ancestry, saying "He sings tenor and therefore he is Welsh.". Thus began Gene's affiliation with the Welsh Society, singing in the Choir and serving on the Board of Directors and making lasting friendships with the Welsh who claimed him as one of their own.
