CWS Cemetery Crawl

The CWS Choir at the Russell Gulch Cemetery Crawl

Cemetery Crawls, as we know them, are events sponsored by the Gilpin County Historical Society. Their purpose is to stimulate interest in that society. Each year, an old cemetery around Central City, Colorado is selected. Members of the Gilpin County Historical Society and volunteers are gathered to play 'spirits of the deceased'. There is usually no shortage of wanna-be actors and actresses. These folks each select a grave in the cemetery and then research the life and times of the one burried there.

The event is advertised and the public invited. A nominal fee is charged for admission. The actors and actresses dress in the costume of the period and wait by the grave marker of the one they have selected to portray. Cemetery crawlers (paying customers) are divided up into small manageable groups or 10 or 12 and led through the cemetery where they meet and listen to the 'spirit' tell his or her life story.

The Russell Gulch cemetery contains many gravestones dating from the late 1800's with inscriptions in Welsh, as many Welsh miners were employed in the area gold mines. Our choir, singing in the background, added a most unique effect to this cemetery crawl.
