CONQUERING
MOUNTAINS

The massive rocky pyramid of Mt. Everest.

M. Dunham wrote...
"Sir Edmund Hilary was the first person to conquer Mt. Everest.
The first time he tried, he failed. He was knighted by the Queen of
England, and at the gala occasion, on the wall behind the head table,
was a huge picture of  Mt. Everest. The people gave him a standing
ovation for even daring to attempt the climb."
"When they ceased applauding, Hilary turned his back to the
audience, faced that picture and said..."
"Mt. Everest, you have defeated me once and you might defeat
me again. But I'm coming back again and again, and I'm going to
win because you can't get any bigger, Mt. Everest, and I can !"
And he did!

In 1953, the British had another shot at the first ascent.
With a whole series of expeditions lined up behind them,
it was apparent that this was the chance. They
deployed an impressive expedition, led by Colonel John
Hunt, who applied both his experience in Himalayan climbing
and in military organization.
The first summit team struck tantalizingly close... reaching
within 300 feet of the summit.
The second team was comprised of Edmund Hillary,
a beekeeper from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa on
his 5th trip to Everest. On the 29th of May, 1953 they had
reached the summit.

 Sir Edmund Hillary wrote...
"...I then realized that the ridge ahead, instead of still
monotonously rising, now dropped sharply away, and
far below I could see the Rongbuk Glacier.  I looked
upward to see a narrow snow ridge running up to a
snowy summit.  A few more whacks of the ice-axe in
the firm snow, and we stood on the top."

The next time you are facing a hill or even a mountain,
that you  feel you may never be able to climb,  keep focused
on the other side, and remember to...
 "measure the valley
...then measure the hill."
Whatever mountain you may be facing be it large or small,
take the time to look upward.  Be moistened with the dews of
heaven.  Look around for God.  He's there with you. With his help,
you too can challenge your mountain as did Sir Edmund Hilary.

"Though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again."
