1.
THERE
ARE MANY REASONS: AFT/ CFT has obtained the
best contracts for part-time faculty up and down the state.
2.
AFT/
CFT is THE community college union. AFT
represents more full- and part-time faculty than any other union, approximately
double the faculty represented by California Teachers Association/ CTA.
CTA is the K-12 union. While they may do a good job for K-12 teachers,
they do not do a very good job for Full-Time community college faculty,
and they do even a worse job for Part-timers. To show how little
importance their community college division has in the organization, they
have no community college representation on their state executive board
(which runs the organization).
3.
AFT
is also the higher ed union nationally. AFT
represents more Full-Time and Part-Time faculty than any other union in
the country.
4.
AFT/ CFT has shown that, when a principle is at stake, it will always fight
for the rights of part-time faculty.
While AFT/ CFT assisted College of the Canyons part-timers in holding popular
organizational meetings, helped us in the hard work of collecting cards,
and spent a fortune legally in support of adjuncts at COC, CTA couldn't
even be bothered to hold one meeting, make one phone call, or take the
time to hand out one card. Instead, they decided to illegally accrete
PT faculty into their organization in order to control the Part-Time Faculty
State Equity Funding sent to COC adjuncts (that they still have hold of).
5.
Moreover,
AFT/ CFT has taken many legal cases all the way to the California State
Supreme Court, winning cases like the Cervisi case which obtained rights
to unemployment insurance for PT faculty - no matter what union - statewide.
In addition its success in the landmark Cervisi
Decision, AFT/ CFT many years ago also (unsucessfully) challenged the
"60% rule" that limits our teaching to 9 units per semester - thus, it
should be obvious that AFT/ CFT BEST REPRESENTS PART-TIME FACULTY INTERESTS!
