The following email came through from one of our grateful COC colleagues:

Dear AFT,

I got your newsletter today, 12/19/02  and I really want to thank you, I had no idea we were eligible for unemployment over the break between semesters.  I called this afternoon as soon as I got your letter.  You guys/gals are doing a great job keeping us all informed.  Hope you all have a wonderful holiday and that we achieve a union in early2003.

Thanks,

R.

The following email came from one of our (now) former collegues at College of the Canyons:

Dear colleagues,

Not to sound like a movie line, but this is my final transmission. I've decided to leave COC and the adjunct merry-go-round in order to return to my former employer. One year ago, I knew what I was getting into - the uncertainty, the lack of benefits, the absence of adequate office space - but I figured it was worth the sacrifice in order to gain some experience.  As it turns out, working with students has been fulfilling. I'm grateful for the opportunity. But I simply cannot endure the administrative whims (I don't know how the rest of you do it, year after year) and I do not feel any closer to the prospect of a full-time position, Actually, I resent the very process of "applying anew" at COC, as if my experience and contacts count for nothing.

I wish all of you well. I'll be teaching at a Job Corps center in Reno, where I'll have the chance to work one-on-one with students who need extra help, rather than trying to save two or three of the dozen or more who slip away from a class of 35.

I hope to hear one day that you have secured the benefits, facilities and respect that you so deserve.

Regards,
Eric Dieterle
