Rarer than Moon rocks!
Another late-1960's GT car balanced on the Great Triple Cusp of romance, engineering, and government regulation. What a decade was the 1960's! And what a mess! I promise I won't go on forever about this, but a few words need to be said. Before automotive innovation impacted softly into the marshmallow airbag of save-us-from-ourselves Big-Brotherism, before market research wrapped its tacky least-common-denominator tentacles entirely around our souls, before corporate committee-think eviscerated creativity and bleached its bones, before bottom-line bean-counting fiscal conservatism froze bold hearts, we saw a few blazing examples -- like this -- of brilliant engineering in the service of passionate design: high-performance cars as (somewhat affordable) functional art. In that transient Camelot of skill, means, and will, we made great things: Lamborghini Miura, Lotus Elan, Toyota 2000 GT, and glorious others. We made lots of junk, too, but who wants to think about that?
