When a lunatic's bomb causes two people to die, it's difficult to call associated events "successful." However, in many ways the 1996 Olympics were a success.
At the core business of the Olympic Games -- the sporting events -- Atlanta did a fine job. Amenities incidental to the Games were less well done. Ironically, Atlanta performed poorest in its supposed specialties: transportation, communication, and commerce. Go figure.
Atlanta did not deserve all the bad press it got. Yes, ceremonies were too long; transportation was sometimes inept; downtown Atlanta looked like a tacky carnival. However, Rachel and I went to several events and saw nothing like the catastrophe some press reports depicted. We had a grand time at:
