A popular outdoor hangout in suburban Cobb County, Kennesaw Mountain stands prominently above the surrounding Piedmont. Site of Federal assault and maneuver during the protracted Battle of Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountain is a naturally favorable defensive position, but easily bypassed by Sherman's army. Today, 140-year-old Confederate defensive works (e.g. gun pits) still are visible.
The mountain's meta-sandstone resists weathering better than surrounding schists and meta-volcanics. As Kennesaw Mountain is a Federal park, sampling is of course not permitted.
