Jeep Cherokee

Cherokee

If you gotta have an SUV . . .

Say what you will about the absurdity of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) -- and much of it deserves to be said -- Jeep Cherokee is at least an honest, straight-up SUV. With truck-like solid-axle suspension and the aerodynamics of a shoebox, Cherokee possibly is more at home in the woods than on the street. This may explain why Daimler-Chrysler killed Cherokee after the 2001 model, in spite of its reputation and continuing solid sales. What do they know, eh?

We have owned two of these: an '88 with 5-speed manual transmission, and this '96 automatic, both with durable 4.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine and 4-wheel drive. The '88 had 260,000 miles on the clock when it was stolen shortly after we bought this '96.
