Roadcuts of Geologic Interest: I-75

I-75 north of Atlanta traverses upper Piedmont metamorphic rock (much of it meta-igneous), crosses the Carters Dam fault north of Lake Allatoona, and follows the Great Valley north past Chattanooga, Tennessee. While in the Piedmont, I-75 roadcuts expose amphibolite, chlorite schist, and similar gnarly stuff. South of Atlanta, I-75 crosses the Fall Line at Macon, passing through the Coastal Plain of Georgia and Florida. A few favorite spots are listed:

Taylor Ridge, SB south of Ringgold exit
Where I-75 SB cuts through Taylor Ridge, a huge cut face on right exposes layered fossiliferous limestone, sandstone, and shale. (Ordovician - Silurian)
-
NB north of Dalton
Cut face on right exposes Silurian Red Mountain sandstone, with interesting sedimentary structures.
-
Red Top Mountain State Park (Lake Allatoona)
Boulders and outcrops of Corbin meta-granite and Red Top Mountain formation.
-
Off Emerson-Allatoona Road
On the shore of Lake Allatoona about 200 meters left of a Civil War monument (Battle of Allatoona Pass), the Allatoona Fault separates Dahlonega Gold Belt amphibolite from schist of the Great Smokies group.
-
Emerson - NB near Lake Allatoona
Cut face on right exposes amphibolite (Rope's Creek meta-basalt?)
-
SB near Lake Allatoona
Loose bank of schist on right
-
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
Meta-sandstone outcrop, site of a Civil War battle.
-
Barrett Parkway exit ramp NB
Cut face on right exposes amphibolite of Laura Lake mafic complex.
-
NB in Atlanta near I-75/I-85 split
Cut face on right (east) at on-ramp just north of I-75/I-85 division departing midtown Atlanta exposes Clairmont formation.
-
NB, south of Atlanta, just south of I-675 split
Cut face on left approaching I-675 division exposes amphibolite
