Roadcuts of Geologic Interest: Georgia Highway 400

Georgia Highway 400 (the Yuppie Autobahn) runs north from prosperous Buckhead past Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, and the west side of Lake Lanier, toward Dahlonega (site of an early gold rush). Between I-285 and Buckhead, drivers pay a 50-cent toll to defray the cost of destroying Northside residential neighborhoods. A few interesting roadcuts:

Glenridge Connector entrance ramp SB
A cut face exposes schist and mylonite of the Brevard Fault Zone
-
SB, south of toll plaza
Just south of the Loridans Drive bridge, a cut bank exposes severely fractured schist, as does a similar bank about one-half mile farther south.
-
SB at Sidney Marcus Boulevard exit ramp
A cut face exposes contorted gneiss of the Clairmont formation.
