Cumberland Plateau

The Cumberland Plateau is an elevated region of Paleozoic sedimentary rock lying west of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley. Comprising rock similar to the Ridge and Valley, this area lies relatively flat, contrasting to the Ridge and Valley's many folds and faults.

The extreme northwest corner of Georgia reaches an area that some geologists consider part of the Cumberland Plateau. Two elongated flat-topped mountains, Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain, extend southwest into Alabama and northeast into Tennessee.
