Oconee-Ocmulgee-Altamaha River System

The Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers unite in south Georgia to form the Altamaha River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean at Darien, Georgia, roughly midway between the borders of South Carolina and Florida.

The Altamaha drainage area lies entirely in Georgia's Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Both the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers rise in Georgia's Piedmont, east of Atlanta and southeast of the Brevard Fault Zone. The Ocmulgee River crosses the Fall Line at Macon. The Oconee River has no Fall Line city comparable to Macon, although Milledgeville, Georgia's former capital, lies on the Oconee just north of the Fall Line.
