Coosa River

The Oostanaula and Etowah Rivers unite at Rome, Georgia, to form the Coosa River. The Coosa River flows west out of Georgia, follows the southwest trend of the Great Valley through eastern Alabama, and unites with the Tallapoosa River south of the Fall Line to form the Alabama River. In southwest Alabama, the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers join in the Mobile River, which flows a short distance south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Just downstream of the Coosa's birth in Rome, limestone bluffs support unusual plant communities. Conservancies protect some of these sites from development.
