Carters Dam and Powerhouse
panoramic composite approximately 90 degrees from
North (left) to East (right)
Dam appears on right; Carters Dam Fault is concealed by
trees to left of lamp post at left side of photo.
Rachel stands at base of cut, right of lamp post.
Examining the cut
Stained by iron and sulfur, rock near the fault is fractured and sheared.
Similar to rock exposed in roadcut on US 76.
Standing in the Fault Zone
On the left, Ridge and Valley Cambrian shale from
Proto-North America's continental
shelf, bearing fossil trilobites;
on the right, metamorphosed volcanic sediments
possibly from a back-arc basin.
Between --
sloping up and left from near Rachel's foot --
the Carters Dam Fault.
Carters Dam Fault
Sheared, scaly crud in the fault.
