Carolina Bays

Scattered through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia, depressions of uncertain origin called Carolina bays dot the lower Coastal Plain. Although Carolina bays superficially resemble limesinks, they are not (all) caused by subsidence. Theories of their origin are many, ranging from meteorite impact to scour by Pleistocene winds.

As low spots in the sandy Coastal Plain, Carolina bays collect water and harbor an assortment of unusual plant and animal life.
