Great Smoky Metasediments
Brushy Mountain Tunnel on the Silver Comet Trail
Near Rockmart, Georgia

The roadbed of the defunct Silver Comet rail line has been paved from Northwest Atlanta to Anniston, Alabama, for cyclists, pedestrians, and equestrians. (Are you up for a carless 100-mile rural ride?) A few miles east of Rockmart, Georgia, the Silver Comet Trail passes through Brushy Mountain Tunnel, cut into tectonized Great Smoky metasediments.

Brushy Mountain Tunnel -- west portal . "Abandon hope . . ."
Actually, it's short, lighted,
and doesn't even smell bad

Seriously fractured and steeply dipping
Blue Ridge Great Smoky metasediments,
a short distance east of the thrust fault boundary
where these metasediments overlie
Great Valley sandstone, limestone, and shale.
(Photographer's cap for scale)
. The usual Blue Ridge tectonic mess
