Career transformation can be an excellent time to better understand one's life purpose and direction. We all need to know that our life and work matter. Thinking about and investing in our future success, during this period of self awareness, is a good use of our resources.

When the layoff comes around will you have anticipated that you are one of those heading out the door?

As a career and business coach, my experience is that most people are surprised when they are chosen to be separated from their workplace. Worse yet, they are not prepared to handle the fear and uncertainty during their upcoming job search. Only after many weeks of unsuccessful job searching do some job seekers decide they need some help in engineering their career transition.

So if you suspect that your place of work is headed for a layoff, now is the time to prepare for the possibility of unemployment. Now is the time to begin to position yourself as a person who people will want to hire because of your knowledge, intensity, leadership and competencies. Now is the time to partner with a career mentor or coach so you are prepared to find, schedule and successfully navigate job interviews.

The preparation work you do today, while employed, will save you many hours, days and even months of fear and uncertainty if you become unemployed.
