Are
you now or soon to be a free agent?
With the economy taking a
beating, you may have escaped the layoff but are
getting caught in the white-collar
job squeeze. If you
don't think you will survive all the reorganizations,
layoffs and downsizing, you probably are considering
becoming a free agent. Today, there are many free
agents.
According to the
latest issue of FAST COMPANY magazine,
millions of people are alive and well and
living in Free Agent Nation:
Fact:
With roughly 16 million soloists, 3
million temps and 13 million
micropreneurs, Free Agent Nation is
larger than the entire public sector.
Free agents outnumber all of the people
who work for federal, state, county and
local governments--even when you
include police officers and
teachers.
Fact:
According to the Census Bureau's
latest figures, 70% of businesses in
the United States have no paid
employees.
Fact:
In California, only one out of three
workers has a traditional job--the
leave-your-home-in-the-morning-to-work-for-someone-else
employment arrangement that is the
basis of this country's labor laws, its
health-insurance and pension systems
and its many public policies. According
to the University of California at San
Francisco, two out of three
Californians don't have a traditional
job.

If you are a new arrival to Free
Agent Nation, you need to respect the law. Being on
your own, you can no longer think like an employee.
Now you should know the Top
5 Guiding Principles
yourself, as a free agent.
In a corporate environment, good
looking and well dressed dummies might escape customer
justice but when you are flying solo, quality counts.
In your micro business, it's just you and your talent
on-the-line with the customer. You are solely
accountable for the work. And it's only you who reaps
the rewards of success and the penalties of
failure.
As a free agent, the formula for
success is based upon what you know, who you know (who
knows you) and your reputation:
Success
= HC X SC X R
So, if you are now or plan to be
a free agent, consider partnering with a mentor or
coach
soon. Getting to the point of enlightened ignorance
(knowing that you don't know what you don't know) will
be faster, cheaper and easier when you share your
fears, goals and dreams with someone you
trust.
What gets you out of
bed each morning? What's the biggest challenge you
have? What kind of support would be helpful to
you?
