On Sunday, June 11th, Hall of Famer,
John Penny & current Indian Ranch Foreman
Tom Robert did a wonderful job Emceeing the show and these are the
highlights. In
November 1946, George Mahoney rented the property and held his first
Sunday afternoon show—probably indoors. Since George only rented but
didn’t own the property, he had many disputes with his landlord who
wanted to break the lease many times. But George persevered and kept the
ranch going every Sunday afternoon for the first ten years. We lost
George and Dixie a number of years ago but not before George was made a
member of the Mass. Country Music Hall of Fame. His daughter Maryanne
Reardon is with us today to help celebrate the 60th Birthday
of Indian Ranch. Please welcome her to the stage. Tom
Robert mentioned that George
Mahoney performed with his partner in the due George & Dixie but
that his wife Florence ran the Indian Ranch business for the first 10
years. Maryanne Reardon
then told some of her memories growing up and living on the property
with her mom and dad in a trailer back where the banquet hall is located
today. Tom then presented Maryanne with two Appreciation Awards—one in
the names of George & Florence Mahoney and one in the names of
George & Dixie. John then introducing the first pioneer entertainer of the day. The first
show here at the Ranch featured George and Dixie singing cowboy songs
and yodeling—The Utah Kid and his Prairie Pals from WOON in
Woonsocket, RI—Emo Carter, the King of the Banjo from West
Virginia—Jerry Martel, the Mad Man of Comedy—and a husband and wife
team known as Joy & Slim. Slim lost his wife and partner Joy a
number of years ago but he is with us today. One of the first acts to
play this ranch is now a member of the Mass. Country Music Hall of
Fame—please make welcome, FRANK
REGO. Song “Blue Moon of Kentucky” with his own brand of yodeling.
Tom then presented Frank with an Indian Ranch Pioneer Artist Award and
hung a brass Pioneer Performer medallion on green ribbon around his
neck. Every pioneer performer received these mementoes following their
act. GEORGIA MAE - In
the late 1930s, a young lady wearing a white cowboy hat and boots wanted
a white guitar to go with them. There were none. So she contacted the
DuPont Co. in Boston and together, they developed the first colored
guitar in history. She also invented the triple yodel and patterned
herself after the great Patsy Montana. The Doctors took away her yodel
but, trooper that she is, she’s with us today. All the way up from
Cape Cod, please welcome, Georgia Mae. Georgia came on stage and
commented on her early years at the ranch. SLIM
SULLIVAN - We have
another Slim with us today—Larry Slim Sullivan performed with a group
called the Radio Rangers. He sang and picked on Dick Curless’ first
record and helped introduce Joe Val to Boston audiences in the 50s. Joe went on to become the premier bluegrass artist in the
area. From Brockton, Mass. and another member of the Mass. Country Music
Hall of Fame, please make welcome Larry Sullivan. Song – “In Another Time, Another Place”, an original
composition. SADOWSKY FAMILY - In
1957, The Sadowsky Family bought this property. At the time, Rock and
Roll was seriously hurting country music everywhere and Indian Ranch was
no exception. The owners almost turned this place into condominiums.
But, as you can see, it is still here and going strong. John Penny
mentioned that in all the years he’s been there, he’s never been
able to get the former foreman on stage. With fingers crossed he asked
the crowd to make welcome a man most folks new, Jake Sadowsky. Jake did come out and make a few remarks
acknowledging some of the acts he had enjoyed over the years that were
there for the celebration. ROBERT FAMILY
– John brought the ranch history up–to-date when he recognized the
current owners of the ranch owners of the ranch, Mr. & Mrs.
Christopher Robert, sitting in the audience and their son Tom on stage.
Tom then vowed to keep the country music tradition going at the ranch
for another 60 years and told of the new amenities in the expanded
camping area including naming the various areas after Nashville,
Branson, Grand Ole Opry, etc. He told us the streets were also going to
have country music stars names. The campers were being polled for their
ideas to help do this, He then presented John with the “John Penny
Lane” sign as a fitting tribute to John’s many years contributing to
the ranch’s entertainment and taking over the booking of all the acts
there since the death of Abe Ford a couple of years ago and the many
charity shows he’s presented there over the years. RICK RAYLE – For
a long time, there was a team known as the Rayle Brothers. One of them
is with us today to help us celebrate. Please welcome, from Attleboro,
Mass., and a member of the Rhode Island Country Music Hall of Fame, Rick
Rayle. Song – “You Don’t Have To Be A Baby To Cry”. Following the
presentation of Rick’s Award and medallion, he mentioned that his late
partner was also a big part of this award. RUSTY ROGERS -- New
England’s version of the Sons of the Pioneers were called the Down
Homers. They performed over WTIC in Hartford, Conn. and on the Mutual
Network from New York. Only two remain from that group today. One is our
headliner, Kenny Roberts who you’ll enjoy a little later. And from way
up in Maine, please say hello to a member of the Maine, Mass. and
Connecticut Halls of Fame, Rusty Rogers. Rusty did not perform but
acknowledged the audience applause. RAY DIXON
is a name familiar to everyone in Rhode Island. He played up and down
the east coast and Canada and has played here many times in the early
years. Please make welcome a member of the Rhode Island Country Music
Hall of Fame, Ray Dixon. Song – “All You Do Is Bring Me Down" and said
he had played the ranch for 20 years from 1955-1975. GREM FERRIS
- Grem Ferris
& the Wheels is a band that played here many times over the years.
They backed up the great Dick Curless and many, many others. Grem is
another member of the Mass. Country Music Hall of Fame, and is from
Wrentham, Mass. Grem couldn’t make it here today but we wanted to
recognize his contribution to the ranch history. BOB & GRACE FRENCH - The
Rainbow Valley Boys and Sweetheart were the premier bluegrass music
group in the Boston area starting in the early 1950s. They helped spread
the music throughout this area and up into the state of Maine. Led by
Bob French and his sweetheart, Grace, they now live in Maine.
Unfortunately, they were not able to make it today. John then invited Gordon
Brown to the stage to accept the awards for Grem and Bob &
Grace. John said Gordy knew more about New England country music history
than anyone and that today’s show could not have happened with his
efforts. Gordy then mentioned that John Penny wouldn’t say it on stage,
but wanted everyone to know that John is a member of the Mass. and New
Hampshire Halls of Fame and his fiddler, Richie Dubois is a member of
Rhode Island’s Hall of Fame. BABE and BILLY JACKSON
are members of the Rhode Island Country Music Hall of Fame. They also
played here many times with their band. We lost Billy a number of years
ago but Babe is with us today. Song – “Room Full of Roses” followed by presentation of her
award and medallion. DUSTY
CAL WITHAM - Back in the early days, Clyde Joy, New England’s Granddaddy of
Country Music was teamed up with Dusty Cal Witham. Clyde’s age and
health dose not allow him to be with us today from his home in New
Hampshire. But his partner, Dusty has come all the way from Cambridge,
New York. Song – “Freight Train Blues” HAYLOFT
JAMBOREE
The premier family group of entertainers for over 60 years in
this area has been the Hayloft Jamboree. Eddie Zack and Cousin Richie
led the group but they are no longer with us. All are members of the
Rhode Island Country Music Hall of Fame. Their sisters, Babs & Maril
are keeping the Hayloft Jamboree tradition alive. Song “Rock-A-Bye Boogie” BOBBY MARTIN
– Another member of the Rhode Island Hall of Fame is with us today. He
played with the Hayloft Jamboree Gang for many years and performed out
here with them as well.
Song – “San Antonio Rose” JOHNNY WHITE
- One fella who is
still a yodelin’ fool around these parts and who played this ranch
many, many times is another Mass. Hall of Fame Member. From Billerica,
Mass. please welcome Johnny White. Song – “Chime Bells” & he included his famous
“Yodelin’ Demonstration” John Penny also
recognized these other pioneers who were invited to the show but unable
to attend. DENNIS MARTIN –
Founder of New England Country Music Club in Uxbridge and FRANK
LANE of KEITH BRADFORD from
RI now has a recording business and is busy in Nashville. Keith also led
the Kitty Wells Band for many years. PEGGY DARLING
and DOUG GARRON, both members
of the MA Country Music Hall of Fame are confined to their home by
illness. BETTY GRIBBEN,
Maine Hall of Fame and CLYDE JOY
NH Hall of Fame are both 88 years old and unable to make the trip. REX TRAILER
- A TV Show called
Boom Town on WBZ in Boston. It had been on the air for about 4 years
when the Sadowsky’s took over. And the Sadowsky’s were talked into
bringing him out here for a show by the now late promoter, Abe Ford.
With Rex’s popularity and his TV show, the ranch had a full house that
day. As you can see, it is still going strong today. Please welcome
another member of the Mass. Country Music Hall of Fame, and a man with
more Awards for his generosity and showmanship than anyone else—Boston
TV’s Singing Cowboy, Rex Trailer. Rex invited former Boom Towner’s to the front of the stage to
sing the Boom Town Theme Song. He then told of writing his next song
right after 9-11-01 for the folks who never had a chance to say goodbye
to their loved ones that day Song - “I Appreciate You”. He then asked the audience to shake
hands with their neighbors. After a brief intermission, the band returned to the stage and
introduced young Jilly Martin
who only had time to sing “Walkin’ After Midnight” as an opening
to bring on the first headliner of the day. KENNY
ROBERTS
– Another member of the Mass. CMA Hall of Fame, he did a wonderful set
of his recordings including “Chocolate Ice Cream Cone” and his 1949
million seller, “(I Never See) Maggie (Alone).” Kenny started his
career as a teenager in the band of the
first headliner hired to play this ranch back in the 1940s, Yodelin’
Slim Clark. Kenny went on to become a great yodeler with the Down Homers
group out in the mid-west. He had his own TV and Radio shows out there
and appeared on many of the major country shows around the United States
including the Midwestern Hayride, The Wheeling West Virginia Jamboree,
the Grand Ole Opry and many
others. When the Down Homers came to New England, The King of the
Yodelers remained in the mid-west and New Englanders Slim & Rocky
Coxx and Rusty Rogers augmented the group on WTIC in Hartford, CT and on
the Coast-to-Coast Mutual Network out of New York. Kenny Roberts
dedicated a couple of his songs to Georgia Mae and, Rusty Rogers. He
also introduced his wife of 30 years, Bettyanne from Weymouth, Mass. who
performed a few songs by herself and in a duet with her husband. After
a well-received performance, another short intermission was taken and
then the second headliner of the day TOMMY
CASH who did a fine show and a
wonderful tribute set to his late brother, Johnny who is in
Nashville’s Hall of Fame. Tommy, who sounds a good deal like his
brother, sang many of the hits made famous by his older brother but also
included some of his own Top 20 hits, including “Six White Horses”.
He got a standing ovation and did an extra song. All in all, a wonderful afternoon of traditional country music and
a grand reunion of older artists at the oldest ranch of its kind in the
country. Courtesy of Gordy Brown 13 - Annual Meeting- Election of Officers. 7:00PM American Legion Post 15 Rt. 1 East Greenwich, RI.
