A 10 mph wind or freezing cold air can reduce solar cooking temperatures by as much as 45 F°, even when using our hot SolaReflex 900 parabolic cookers. Here’s an an important heating accessory that eliminates wind and cold air caused heat loss and provides other practical solar heating functions.
Our polycarbonate ClearDome Solar Clear Box Oven and the less expensive Clear dome pot cover ($39) are lightweight, unbreakable, heat resistant, and an excellent insulator from wind, cold air, occasional clouds, dust, bugs and animals. Unlike commonly used clear plastic bags, they are made to last for years in the worst of environments. They are both completely safe around foods even at high temperatures. Most labs use polycarbonate containers to test water and chemical purity.A closed “mini greenhouse” is created around your pot, making an ideal cooking and heating environment that only needs the free, concentrated solar energy from your reflector to generate the high heat levels. It's much like sitting in your car on a sunny day with the windows rolled up, but heating is greatly accelerated by our high quality parabolic cooking reflectors. The warmth is trapped under the clear containers, reducing heat dissipation. Concentrated solar energy is the purest, safest method of cooking because there are no fumes or dangers from leading fuel.
Here's a look at our newest SolaReflex AA Octagon Parabolic cooker on the left that's so hot, fast, and easy to use, that it has replaced our older Pyramid solar cooker. The clear dome pot cover also works well with this fast cooker and is essential for backing bread because moisture that forms on the inside of the dome passes by the bread, instead of soaking the bottom of it. About 90% of the sun's pure solar energy (better than most glass) passes through the clear 14” x 9” x 9” high plastic box oven, or the 12" round by 7" high clear dome pot cover. A removable, snap down clear plastic lid makes it easy to place your food inside the box. The clear pot cover is even easier to use because it's placed over the pot on the reflector base of the SolaReflex 900 parabolic cooker. The ambient air temperature around your food gets almost 300% hotter than the outside air temperature. Even freezing winter air has little effect on the solar heated environment near your black pot. We've had the interior air temperature above 320 degrees F with no damage to either polycarbonate clear containers.
Combined with your SolaReflex parabolic, either clear container becomes a unique hybrid parabolic/box type cooking device that has a much higher, quicker heating temperature while preserving the solar generated heat inside.
The high level of concentrated solar energy created by our super hot SolaReflex 900 Parabolic cooking reflectors visible on our homepage at: www.cleardomesolar.com, passes through the clear polycarbonate plastic walls of both containers and lands on a closed black pot or roasting pan (provided by the user). At the bottom of the clear box oven is a black anodized aluminum heat absorber that helps increase the heat buildup inside.
The clear pot cover does not include a metal heat absorber--your pot becomes the heat absorber. As heat builds inside the box and pot cover, food begins to cook. Rapid heat dissipation from moving air is eliminated. Most one quart meals are completely cooked in 45 to 90 minutes when using our SolaReflex 900 reflector-even on sunny cold and windy days. The larger the meal, the longer it will take to cook. Up to four quart pots without handles (seen in photo) can be used inside either container.
Even without our cooking reflector, hot food will safely stay hot all day (over 140°) on sunny days above 60° F because much of the incoming solar energy, once converted to heat, escapes very slowly. They are both perfect solar food warmers, even if you didn't solar cook your food. Because of the clear top and sides, cooking and heating can occur from one hour after sunrise to an hour before sunset. When not heating food, you can use the clear box for safe food storage.
Solar cooks or bakes any type of food
Besides solar cooking meat,
vegetables, rice, fish or chicken, you can bake your own cookies, a loaf
of bread, make nachos, or quesadillas inside the Clear box oven being heated
with either of our two Square Parabolic cooking reflectors. The Clear dome
pot cover works best on the SolaReflex 900 parabolic cooker. Moisture leaves
bread or cookies baking on a cookie sheet or open pan and forms on the
lid and drips down the sides away from the food, allowing it to dry out
and bake, even on windy days.
Most other foods should be cooked in closed black metal or glass containers,
or inside heat resistant plastic cooking bags.
Meat, chicken fish, and even bacon can be cooked in open pans and easily browned with the SolaReflex 600 reflector. Three chicken breasts or a three pound steak or roast will solar bake in 60-90 minutes and have a tasty, pleasing looking brown top. Baking and browning a loaf of bread will usually take 70-90 minutes, while a tray of cookies will take 30 minutes or less. Nachos and melted cheese sandwiches only need 15-20 minutes inside either clear container on a black tray. Or try 6 fresh cobs of corn without water and they'll be hot and ready to eat in about 30-45 minutes.
It will even purify small quantities of foul or chemically polluted water (even salt water) when placed inside an open black pot inside the closed oven or under the clear pot cover that has a heat proof plate or pan underneath--when it’s heated with either parabolic cooker. Evaporated water, less the impurities, quickly forms on the inside lid and sides of the containers then drips down to the bottom of the box as tasty pure drinking water.
Or you can melt three quarts of snow or ice and defrost food in about 20-30 minutes when placed in a closed black pot inside, even on freezing, windy sunny winter days using only the power of the sun and our parabolic. Food can be cooked in winds over 20 mph, when conventional gas flames will have already blown out. At higher altitudes when cooking usually takes longer using conventional fuel, it's actually quicker with solar energy because the amount of radiant energy from the sun can increase by 25-30% due to a thinner atmosphere.
