Prior, during, & after College, I was a professional fulltime singer, songwriter, musician, entertainer working up and down the East & West Coasts of the USA. Earning a living & paying the bills wasn't easy but it could be done successfully as I did it. Many of my audiences wanted to buy some of my original music but I didn't have a studio produced product to sell to them. In my teens I had turned down major financial backing for a few major recording deals because I knew nothing about THAT business. So I started to study and absorb as much as I could about the actual process of making Records, Marketing, Manufacturing & the real Business Industry of Music. I had seen many fellow club musicians & singers making Ego LP's that had never charted on the radio, and even some others who had signed contracts with Record Labels (or saying they did) but their recording contracts were all eventually broken. I wanted to know why this happened so that I would not make the same costly mistakes especially with someone else's money. Finally after learning from other people's failures and successes, I went forward in a daring move with a "no strings attached" small businessman's investment to make 4 radio quality studio recordings, as I was instructed, to just prove radio marketability. At that time a retired drummer who worked for me for 7 years said they'd help me "in name only" doing the business $ management which I did anyway for years plus allowing me to use their name for this business. My personal accountant was a retired part time bass player who worked with this drummer who could handle all the financial books & tax issues that may arrise. Also one of my brother's had just made the American Registry of "Who's Who in Business" and I could call on him any time for advice. By this time, I had also established a few personal contacts within the TV & Country Music Industry which gave me other advice from another perspective. Momma once said, "Never burn those bridges" with people in your life and I never have, and I'm always hoping to build more bridges of friendship each day.
