COMMUNICATIONS

Uhura

She was born in 2239 in the United States of Africa on the planet Earth. She is an African, a citizen of the Bantu Nation of United Africa of the 23rd century. Since childhood she had been interested in communications and was already a highly proficient communications professional at eighteen years of age when her sense of adventure led her into the Space Service. She is a desirable and attractive young lady, and a highly able starship officer, considered by Captain Kirk fully as capable and reliable as any lieutenant aboard. She plays her comm panel like a piano keyboard, so it's appropriate messages received by the Enterprise's computer each day, ranging from news from members. She also occasionally mans the navigation console and the sensors.

Whenever Uhura goes on landing parties, she proves herself an adaptable and capable officer.

Uhura is torn between the idea of someday becoming a wife and mother, and a desire to remain in the service as a career officer. Her life at present is a battle between her female need for the pleasant routine of Earthbound home and family versus the personal challenge of starship life and continued new worlds to conquer.

Proud of her heritage, she wears African dress off duty and when relaxing. She speaks Swahili fluently, and decorates her quarters with African statues, potter, bottles and plants. Her life philosophy, nowhere near as Westernized as Sulu's, reflects the warm, nonaggressive "man-nature-oneness" culture of the 23rd century Bantu nation which became Earth's best example of blending advanced technology with a naturalistic agrarian philosophy.

Uhura (feminine for the Swahili word for "freedom") is well-liked by the entire crew, and during off-duty hours in the ship's recreation areas is in demand for her son ballads, ranging from traditional Earth tunes to favorites from a dozen other planets. Uhura's love of music is so great that when the powerful alien Trelane granted her the sudden ability to play the harpsichord. Uhura enoyed her neew talent, despite the fact that she and her fellow officers were Trelane's prisoners. She also has a lovely singing voice. One of her favorite songs is "Beyond Antares."

Her most traumatic experience is having her memory wiped out by the computer/space probe Nomad when it interprets her singing as a biological malfunction. Doctor McCoy uses advanced medical techniques to retain her and restore her to normal. Uhura is a close friend of Lt. Sulu and Ensign Chekov, and is extremely loyal to Kirk and Spock.
