Montgomery Scott
Born: Scotland, United Kingdom
Service Number: SE 19754.T.
Lieutenant Montgomery Scott is affectionately known as "Scotty" by all those aboard. Of Scottish descent, he speaks with a brogue that is heavy with the heather and highlands of his native Scotland. Scotty never married but he became romantically involved with fellow crew member Mira Romaine in 2269. The relationship ended when Romaine transferred to Memory Alpha.
Scotty has knocked around space more than any other man aboard. At one time or another he has served aboard passenger vessels, merchant marine-type vessels, freighters, and a variety of military-type vessels, acquiring a valuable broad based knowledge of engines and engineering. The U.S.S. Enterprise was the first starship on which Scott served as chief engineer and he distinguished himself many times in that position by improvising engineering miracles that more than once saved the ship and its crew.
As the ship's Engineering Officer. Scotty is recognized as the third-in-command and assumes charge of the vessel when Kirk and Spock are absent. As one of the senior officers aboard, he has significantly influenced the outcome of many an adventure involving the Enterprise and its crew.
Adventure seems to be in his blood. He comes from a long line of adventuring men--there were Scotts in clipper ships, in early aviation, at Flanders in World War I, a Scott was on the first large expedition to the Moon.
Engineering also seems to run in his blood. He is an engineer by nature as much as by trade. During off-duty hours he would rather tinker around in the engineering department than join in recreation activities. Engineering is an emotion to Scott; beauty is a perfect engine, perfectly maintained, perfectly operating.
He considers the Engineering Department his own private domain and is likely to view anyone entering his department (even the Captain) as an intruder. He considers the U.S.S. Enterprise to be owned by himself, subconsciously thinks of the Captain as simply the "driver." Where his precious vessel is concerned, he is fiercely defensive. Let anyone say anything less than complimentary about the Enterprise and they immediately find themselves facing his considerable wrath.
Scotty is intensely loyal to Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. His relationship with Dr. McCoy, on the other hand, is a different one entirely. Scotty and McCoy are extremely close friends. They enjoy drinking together and are more alike as characters than either Kirk and Spock.
Scotty has no desire
to command a space vessel. He is much happier as Engineering Officer, which
he considers an assignment really more important and certainly more enjoyable
than that of Captain.
In view of Scotty's roving nature, perhaps in is a good thing that he has few family ties. Although his mother and father are still living, he has no brothers or sisters. Although he enjoys children, he has never been married. He is a hell-raiser while on shore leave, and his escapades usually involve women, the more exotic the better.
Aboard ship, however, he's completely another man. There the ship's engines are his all-consuming passion. Where Kirk is "married" to the vessel out of his command responsibilities, Scotty's attachment to the vessel comes out of deep love.
