James Doohan

Engineering Officer Scott is played by James "Jimmy" Doohan, one time "bad boy" of the Royal Canadian Air Force. (Scotty was named Montgomery Scott at jimmy's request, because his middle name is Montgomery and one of his sons is named Montgomery.) A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Doohan earned the eccentric title when Doohan says, "I guess they thought i was crazy because I used to fly my plane on a slalom course between telephone poles."

A veteran radio performer with over 3,500 shows to his credit, Jimmy first came to the United States in 1946, remaining here until 1953. He spent three of those years teaching techniques of acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. He returned to the States again in 1961, working in television, radio, motion pictures, and on the stage.

Prior to becoming a regular on STAR TREK, Doohan had made more than 350 television appearance. his credits include roles on "Bonanza," "Blue Light," "Gunsmoke," "The FBI," "The Virginian," "Ben Casey," "Bewitched," "Hazel," and "Peyton Place."

Among his numerous motion picture credits are The Wheeler Dealer, The Satan Bug and Bus Rieley's Back in Town. He has also appeared in several films produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

His theatrical appearances number more than one hundred and include roles in King Lear and Macbeth. He says his ultimate goal in the theater is to play Lear at the age of fifty-five.

An expert delectation, Jimmy is as much at home in his role of a Scotsman as he would be if called upon to portray a Scandinavian or a Southern gentleman.

An excellent marksman and sportsman, he lists his hobbies as riding, skiing, swimming, and mountain climbing.

Jimmy Doohan resides in Hollywood with his lovely dark-haired wife, Anita. He has two daughters and a set of twin boys by a previous marriage.
