skate park legacy
advisory team s.p.l.a.t

I felt the need to put a page up on my site about these going-ons, lots of important info and actions to take, Portland skaters take note!.

No more S.P.L.A.T committee meetings. The process is finished.

After 18 monthes of meetings, research, and public input, the S.P.L.A.T committee has wrapped up with a finished list of 19 recommended sites for skate parks and the recommendation that the first skatepark be built in Glenhaven park. Two skateparks will be developed within the next 3 years, the second location hasn't been decided on yet. The committe will soon take these recommendations before the City council.

Glenhaven, located in NE Portland next to Madison Highschool, will be a "district" sized park, at least 10,000 sf. (smaller than 2 tennis courts). There were many reasons why S.P.L.A.T decided on this as the first park to build, a big one being all the neighborhood support. The location is easy to get to via mass transit and has good visability.

Here is the final City wide list of recommended sites:

Kenton Park site
University Park site
Pier Park (already exisiting but will be re-built)

What is S.P.L.A.T?
It's the Skate Park Legacy Advisory Team, a committee of 20 or so interested, professional and diverse people in charge of turning that Levy money we voters voted for in 2002, into skateparks for Portland. The committee seems to be truly trying their best and to honestly want to involve the public-YOU-in their decision making process. Using input from professionals, public surveys and public workshops, the committee has been whittling down the original list of over 400 suggested sites to a trimmed down list of only the best. They want and welcome more input from YOU. This is your chance. Get involved now, and let's ride this to fruition. Attend the meetings and future workshops. Keep an eye on my page or the official page for S.P.L.A.T. to keep informed.

What are we working for?
A total of 13 skateparks! 1 Regional Facility, minimum 40,000 sq. ft.(The BIG one), 4 District skateparks, minimum 10,000 sq. ft. each, and 8 Neigborhood skateparks, minimum 1500 sq. ft. each. The city has a legal obligation, based on the Levy lingo, to have completed 2 skateparks by the year 2008.

HOW TO DO IT
Attend the meetings and workshops.
