You've Got to Hide Your Love Away Lyrics

Lennon/McCartney

Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small

Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

How could I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in

How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

John Lennon's friend Pete Shotton came up with the "Hey"s in the chorus.
The line "feeling 2 foot small" was written "feeling 2 foot tall." Lennon sang it wrong but liked it and left it that way.
Lennon: "That's me in my Dylan period."
Session musicians played flutes. It was the first time outsiders played on a Beatles record.
It was rumored that this was the first gay rock song, a message to Beatles manager Brian Epstein, who was gay.
Covered by Joe Cocker in 1991 on his album Night Calls. Cocker previously covered The Beatles "I'll Cry Instead," "With A Little Help From My Friends," and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window."
