Friends Lyrics - Led Zeppelin

Bright light almost blinding,
Black night still there shining,
I can't stop, keep on climbing,
Looking for what I knew.

Had a friend, she once told me,
"You got a friend, you ain't lonely,"
Now she's gone and left me only
Looking for what I knew.

Mmm, I'm telling you now,
The greatest thing you ever can do now,
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now,
It's very easy just.

Met a man on the roadside crying,
Without a friend, there's no denying,
You're incomplete, they'll be no finding
Looking for what you knew.

So anytime somebody needs you,
Don't let them down, altho' it grieves you,
Some day you'll need someone like they do,
Looking for what you knew.

On a trip to India, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant recorded a version of this with the Bombay Symphony Orchestra.
One of a few Led Zeppelin songs that used strings. Bass player John Paul Jones did the arrangement.
Page and Plant wrote this in 1970 at Bron-yr-Aur, the cottage in Wales they went to after a grueling US tour. The cottage had no electricity or running water. It didn't even have cable.
Influenced by Neil Young. It has been closely referenced to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's "Carry On." If you listen, the first part of the song is almost exactly identical to this song. Even so, this song has not been tried on conviction of plagiarism like many Zeppelin songs. (thanks, Jeff - Kendall Park, NJ)
