TODAY'S TIP: NO HTML IN MAIL MESSAGES
by Paul Dmytrewycz
We recently ran a tip on one reader's inability to read HTML-encoded
e-mail messages. The reader was certain the messages were sent to him
containing HTML, but he couldn't view them in Messenger. Initially, we
thought that it was a problem with Messenger and that he did not have
his attachment settings configured properly.
This may indeed have been the case for that particular reader.
However, some further research has revealed that in fact MANY Netscape
users have a problem with the way Netscape handles messages sent by a
person using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
From the Netscape Help page:
Cannot receive any emails in HTML format
When this happens, you can still read the message by clicking View,
Page Source.
OR
From the Messenger Window, go to the View menu and deselect Attachments
Inline.
Subject: Re: Reading Outlook Express 5.0 mail Problems.
Hi,
Any hints would be appreciated.
The problem is on their end: Outlook sends non-standard formats
that only Outlook can parse.
Sometimes, replying and quoting the message will let you see it.
Request that the offenders use plain text.

"Messenger works with correctly formed HTML messages. However, if the sender of the message is using Outlook or Outlook Express and has set unicode for character encoding, you will get blank messages. The problem is due to incorrect character encoding in the Outlook and Outlook Express headers. Netscape supports unicode but only when the character encoding is properly indicated in the headers."

I am having problems when people send me mail using Outlook Express
5.0. Some e-mails only open by a percentage (60-75%) and stop, others not at all. Does anyone have a fix for this. I have been to a few of the Netscape sites and have drawn a blank. I am using Netscape Messenger Server 3.6 & Communicator 4.72
