- Uninstall Netscape, using Add/Remove
- Delete:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 7 Folder
C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla Folder
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles Folders
(Ensure you have made a backup of the Profiles folder before
deleting.)
- And, due to bugs in the Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.4 installer:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408
Otherwise Netscape, or Mozilla may not respond when clicking on the
Desktop icon, or executable file.
See: Netscape won't start - Nothing happens!
- Reboot your PC
- Install Netscape/Mozilla
- Create a NEW Profile
- Open Netscape/Mozilla:
You need to go through the Edit | Preferences, and change
some of the defaults to your personal preferences, e.g., the
Sidebar, startup page, etc. If you are upgrading, there may be new
Preferences that you may wish to use.
- Open a web page which requires you to enter your password.
This will create your password file e.g., 12345678.s
Next: copy the somenumber.s password file from the OLD salted folder,
to the new salted folder.
Rename the newly created password file to X12345678.s
Rename the OLD password file to 12345678.s
Follow the same procedure for somenumbers.w (Fill Form Data)
- Set up your Mail & Newsgroups Accounts
- Next:
With Netscape/Mozilla closed:
In the NEW Profile Folder:
(NOTE: If it asks to overwrite the files say YES.)
Copy all the files from the OLD profile News folder to the NEW News
folder. This doesn't always work, and you may have to resubscribe.
- Copy all the files with no .msf extensions from the
OLD profile Mail folder, including SBD Folders
(these are subfolders) to the NEW Mail folder:
Again, exclude files with .msf extensions
- Copy rules.dat. This file contains your Mail Filters, and is located in:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\accountname
(Depending on your OS)
- Copy from the OLD profile, and paste into the NEW profile:
***abook.mab (Address Book)
bookmarks.html
cert8.db (Security Certificates)
cookies.txt
cookperm.txt (cookie and image permissions)
custom.dic (Dictionary)
history.mab (Collected Addresses)
hostperm.1 (Supersedes cookperm.txt in older versions)
panels.rdf (Panel displayed in the Sidebar)
search.rdf (Search Plugins in the Sidebar)
training.dat (Junk Mail Control)
user.js (If you have created the file. If not, then disregard)
- If you created these two files, also copy to the new Profile:
usercontent.css (User customization/appearance settings (text colors,
etc.)
userchrome.css (Controls the UI Chrome of Netscape)
- Copy the Plugins folder backup to:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape, or C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla
- ***If you had created Address Books in
the old Profile, in addition to the Personal Address Book, follow
this procedure:
Open Netscape/Mozilla, and the Address Book
Create a new Address Book for each of the additional Address Books
which you created in your OLD Profile.
What you name them is irrelevant...
Close Netscape/Mozilla
Go to your salted (*.slt) folder
You should now see the new Address Books you just created, listed
in the NEW salted folder. They will be listed as abook-1.mab,
abook-2.mab, abook-3.mab, etc.
Next:
Close Netscape/Mozilla
In the OLD Profile
Copy abook-1.mab to the NEW Profile salted (*.slt) folder
It should ask to replace the existing file of the same name
Answer YES
Repeat the process for each additional Address Book
When you open Netscape/Mozilla and the Address Book, the additional
Address Books,
containing the addresses, should be in place.
- It is recommended that you do NOT copy the following
files:
Cache Folder
chrome/*.jar file
chrome.rdf
downloads.rdf file
localstore.rdf file
prefs.js file
xul.mfl file
Reusing these files could cause Netscape to malfunction.
